BASIC FUNCTION

The Optician assists and educates patients with their selection of eyeglass frames, lenses, and lens enhancements. They are responsible for overseeing all duties in the optical area, including placing orders, maintaining inventory, dispensing, lab finishing, and repairs / adjustments for eyeglasses. This position also requires providing general practice support such as contact lens ordering, appointment scheduling, and general patient care coordination.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists and educates patients with the selection of frames, lenses, and lens enhancements based on the patient’s prescription and lifestyle needs.
• Processes eyeglasses which includes pricing, measuring, order fulfillment and billing.
• Repairs and adjusts eyeglasses while ensuring patient satisfaction.
• Maintains clean, organized and stocked eyeglass displays.
• Assist patients with the purchase of contact lenses, teach new contact lens wearers how to insert, remove, clean and care for lenses.
• Manages inventory of contact lenses, eyeglass frames, accessories, tools and office supplies.
• Operate lens cutting and enhancement machinery in a safe and appropriate manner.
• Perform regular machine maintenance in accordance with maintenance checklist and reports equipment malfunctions.
• Meets company safety rules and standards to include following guidelines for hazardous material handling and waste disposal.
• Control lab inventory through auditing tray management procedures, special orders, check-in of lenses, breakage, returns, and the monitoring of damaged and defective products
• Attend continuing education courses to keep informed of new technology and advances in the optical industry

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

Additionally provides office support by answering incoming calls, scheduling appointments and checking patients in for appointments. This job description is meant to be a guideline for coordinating daily activities, but additional practice duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

· High school diploma or equivalent

· 1-2 years of optometric experience

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with both colleagues and patients

· Basic understanding of vision related eye conditions

· Computer literacy in both general office applications as well as optometric software and supplier / insurance portals

· Neat, well groomed and adheres to dress code requirement

· Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods depending on job tasks

· American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Certification preferred

· Optical sales experience preferred

PAY AND BENEFIT SUMMARY

Job Type: Full-Time / Non-Exempt

Pay: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour

• 7:45am – 5:15pm Monday – Thursday
• 7:45am – 1:15pm Friday
• No weekends!
• Office is closed for 1 week mid-summer
