Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) Workforce Training & Professional Development is seeking an experienced HVAC professional to provide instruction for the College's Heat Pump Installer Training program and related EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification training.

The instructor will provide classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction designed to prepare participants to safely and professionally install ductless mini-split heat pump systems. The instructor will also facilitate EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification review sessions and serve as an approved proctor for EPA 608 certification examinations.

This is a part-time/contract instructional position with courses offered periodically throughout the year based on enrollment and workforce training needs.

KVCC is an Efficiency Maine Registered Trainer for Heat Pump Installer Training. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory experience to prepare participants to professionally install heat pump indoor units, outdoor units, and line sets. Students completing the Heat Pump Installer Training and the separately offered EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification training gain skills and credentials applicable to employment with Maine HVAC and heat pump installation contractors.

Responsibilities:

Heat Pump Installer Training

  • Deliver KVCC's 40-hour Heat Pump Installer Training using established curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Provide a combination of classroom instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on laboratory activities.
  • Teach proper installation of ductless mini-split heat pump systems, including indoor and outdoor units, line sets, electrical connections, condensate management, evacuation, commissioning, and system start-up.
  • Provide instruction in heat pump operation, refrigeration cycle fundamentals, basic electrical theory, troubleshooting, safe work practices, and proper use of HVAC tools and equipment.
  • Provide instruction related to current refrigerant requirements and practices, including Low GWP/A2L refrigerants.
  • Demonstrate proper installation techniques and supervise students as they complete hands-on installation and troubleshooting activities.
  • Reinforce applicable manufacturer specifications, codes, industry standards, and workplace safety practices.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional learning environment.
  • Evaluate student participation, skill development, and successful completion of required training activities.

EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification

  • Facilitate EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification preparation and review sessions.
  • Review refrigerant handling requirements, vapor-compression refrigeration concepts, service equipment, recovery procedures, environmental regulations, and other topics included in the EPA Section 608 certification examination.
  • Prepare participants for Core, Type I, Type II, Type III, and/or Universal certification examinations, as applicable.
  • Serve as an approved EPA Section 608 examination proctor and administer certification examinations in accordance with testing organization and EPA requirements.
  • Maintain examination security and follow all required testing and reporting procedures.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with KVCC Workforce Training & Professional Development staff to schedule and prepare training sessions.
  • Review and provide feedback on curriculum, equipment, supplies, and instructional materials as industry practices and technology evolve.
  • Assist with maintaining heat pump training equipment and identifying equipment or supply needs.
  • Complete required attendance, assessment, and course documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with students, KVCC staff, employers, and industry partners.
  • Support KVCC's commitment to providing high-quality, industry-responsive workforce training.

Schedule:

Training is offered periodically throughout the year based on enrollment and workforce needs. The Heat Pump Installer Training is typically delivered as a 40-hour program. EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification preparation and testing are offered separately. Daytime and/or occasional evening instructional availability may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated professional experience installing and servicing ductless mini-split heat pump systems.
Current EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
Strong working knowledge of HVAC/refrigeration principles, electrical fundamentals, refrigerant handling, system evacuation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and safe installation practices.
Knowledge of current heat pump technology and industry standards.
Ability to demonstrate HVAC installation procedures and safely supervise hands-on student activities.
Ability to communicate technical information effectively to adult learners with varying levels of experience.
Ability and willingness to become an approved EPA Section 608 exam proctor if not already approved.


Preferred Qualifications:
Five or more years of professional HVAC, refrigeration, or heat pump installation/service experience.
Previous experience teaching, training, mentoring, or supervising HVAC technicians or apprentices.
Experience providing hands-on technical training to adult learners.
Experience with Efficiency Maine heat pump installation requirements and standards.
Experience installing and servicing multiple brands of ductless mini-split heat pump systems.
Current or previous authorization to proctor EPA Section 608 certification examinations.
Familiarity with Low GWP/A2L refrigerants and current refrigerant transition requirements
