The Town of Vinalhaven is accepting applications for a part-time Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) and Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI). This is a professional position involving administrative and technical work in enforcing local, state, and federal building and plumbing codes, land use, shoreland zone, and related regulations in a fair, consistent, and professional manner. This position would also support the Planning Board and Board of Appeals as needed.

Vinalhaven is a year-round community of approximately 1300, located 15 miles off the coast of Rockland and is accessible by the Maine State Ferry Service (Rockland), Penobscot Island Air (Owls Head), or private boat. The Town is open to discussing travel expenses.

Work hours are flexible with some duties being done remotely.

Essential Duties:

  • Review building permits and land use applications for compliance with local ordinances and state regulations.
  • Conduct field inspections and investigate complaints regarding potential ordinance violations.
  • Issue permits and maintain accurate records of permits, inspections, violations, and enforcement actions.
  • Enforce local, state, and federal codes and ordinances, including Shoreland Zoning requirements.
  • Attend Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings as requested and provide technical guidance.
  • Recommend updates and improvements to municipal ordinances when appropriate.
  • Maintain regular office hours at least one day per week.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and timely service to the public.
  • Work cooperatively with office staff.

Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills to manage email, reports, correspondence, and spreadsheets.
  • Have, or obtain within 12 months, State of Maine certification as a CEO and LPI.
  • Familiarity with land use planning and development is preferred.
  • Possess a valid Maine driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Compensation Is Negotiable Based On Qualifications And Experience.
