A growing wealth management firm is seeking a Estate Planning Specialist / Estate Planning Lead to build and enhance its estate planning capabilities in McLean. This is a unique opportunity for a technically strong professional to develop and shape the estate planning function within an established advisory platform.
Position Summary
This role will serve as the firm’s primary estate planning resource, partnering with advisors and clients on complex planning needs while establishing a structured, repeatable estate planning offering.
The individual will play a key role in designing workflows, refining planning standards, and integrating estate strategies into broader financial plans. While highly visible and influential, this role does not initially include direct people management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Estate Planning Strategy & Execution
- Lead the development and delivery of estate planning strategies for high-net-worth and complex client situations
- Analyze estate documents and provide recommendations aligned with client goals and overall financial plans
- Advise on topics including wealth transfer, trusts, gifting strategies, tax mitigation, and legacy planning
- Partner with external attorneys and tax professionals as needed
Department & Function Development
- Build and formalize the firm’s estate planning processes, workflows, and service model
- Establish best practices, templates, and consistent standards for estate planning engagement
- Integrate estate planning into the broader financial planning framework
- Identify opportunities to expand and enhance estate-related services
Advisor & Client Support
- Collaborate with advisors to incorporate estate strategies into client relationships
- Participate in client meetings to discuss estate planning recommendations
- Serve as an internal subject matter expert and resource for estate-related questions
Thought Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Stay current on estate planning laws, regulations, and industry trends
- Contribute to internal education, training sessions, and knowledge sharing
- Help elevate the overall technical capabilities of the planning team
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or related field
- 5 years of experience in estate planning, wealth planning, or a related discipline
- Strong working knowledge of trusts, estate tax strategies, and wealth transfer planning
Preferred Credentials
- CFP®, CPA, JD, or LLM (Estate Planning or Taxation) strongly preferred
Skills & Expertise
- Deep technical knowledge of estate planning concepts and strategies
- Ability to translate complex legal and tax concepts into clear, client-friendly guidance
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of building a function
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to partner effectively across teams
