About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Dog Warden, canvasses neighborhoods within Mahoning County to check for compliance with dog licensing requirements. Assist with the daily operations of the Mahoning County Dog Pound by caring for the dogs housed in the kennel, and the cleaning and upkeep of the complex.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive to routes determined by the Dog Warden; walk through assigned neighborhoods within Mahoning County, going door-to-door to initiate contact with the public to check for proper licensing of dogs kept in the homes.
  • Educate the public on the importance, benefits and law requirements of a pet license; answer inquiries.
  • Use a County radio or County cellular phone to maintain communications and location with the Dog Warden’s office.
  • Complete reports of daily activities.
  • Assist dog owners to purchase dog licenses through application handouts.
  • Accept payments while working in the office.
  • Update license records through log books and/or computer devices.
  • Feed animals according to schedule and feeding instructions; provide clean water daily.
  • Grooming duties of animals in the pound, such as washing, brushing, clipping and trimming coats, cutting nails and cleaning ears; exercise regimens.
  • Responsible for the cleaning, sanitizing and minor repair of cages, runs and related areas.
  • Report to the Dog Warden or Kennel Supervisor any potential health or behavioral problems involving the animals in the County’s care.
  • Maintain and organize work areas and equipment in a clean, safe and orderly condition; follow prescribed safety and housekeeping regulations for the office and the Pound.
  • Light cleaning of offices, emptying trash and mop floors.
  • Handle and restrain aggressive or sick animals.
  • Recognize abnormal or threatening situations.
  • Respond to concerns and complaints from the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Provide information to the public about the benefits of licensing their pets, the Dog Warden’s services to the public and community awareness of animal control statues.
  • Maintain knowledge and increase skills through attendance at meetings, conferences and in-service training.

· Perform additional duties and assignments as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license, with an acceptable driving record
