Job Summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a highly experienced Senior Azure Infrastructure Engineer to lead the design, implementation, governance, and operational management of the agency's enterprise Microsoft Azure environment. This role requires a senior cloud infrastructure professional with deep expertise in Azure services, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), cloud security, enterprise networking, disaster recovery, monitoring, and Azure governance. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership while building secure, scalable, and resilient cloud platforms across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, configure, and govern enterprise Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
• Lead Azure cloud architecture, resource deployment, networking, and security implementations.
• Implement, maintain, and monitor mission-critical Azure infrastructure and cloud services.
• Plan and execute cloud migration initiatives from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform (preferred) or ARM/Bicep.
• Implement and manage Azure governance, security policies, and operational standards.
• Design, implement, and maintain enterprise backup and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.
• Provide production support, troubleshooting, and operational management for cloud infrastructure.
• Utilize Azure Monitor, Workbooks, Alerts, and observability tools to build enterprise monitoring solutions.
• Support vulnerability remediation initiatives using tools such as Tenable.
• Collaborate closely with Architecture, Security, Development, and Governance teams.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-training to engineering teams.
• Present technical recommendations, cloud strategies, and risk assessments to leadership and executive management.

Required Skills

• 10 years of experience implementing, managing, monitoring, and supporting Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
• 7 years of experience with Terraform (preferred) or other Infrastructure as Code technologies (ARM, Bicep, etc.).
• 10 years of experience planning and executing migrations from on-premises environments to Azure.
• 10 years of experience supporting mission-critical enterprise environments.
• 10 years of experience implementing enterprise backup and disaster recovery strategies.
• 10 years of experience implementing Azure networking and security policies.
• 10 years of experience with Azure Monitor, alerting, dashboards, and observability solutions.
• 10 years of experience supporting vulnerability remediation and enterprise security initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of networking concepts, OSI model, routing, protocols, and network troubleshooting.
• Experience collaborating with enterprise Architecture, Security, Governance, and Development teams.
• Excellent leadership, mentoring, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

• Microsoft Azure certifications such as:
  • Azure Administrator Associate
  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert
• Networking certifications such as:
  • Network
  • CCNA
  • Equivalent certifications
• Experience with Tenable vulnerability management.
• Experience designing secure, scalable, enterprise cloud platforms.
