What are the responsibilities and job description for the Analytical Lab Scientist position at Magris Talc?
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The Analytical Lab Scientist position is lab-based and will report to the Manager of Analytical Science. This role will play a vital role within the Analytical Group to provide laboratory analysis support to our operations (analysis of mine and process samples), customers (analysis of products which incorporate minerals as functional additives), and support related to development of new applications. It is vital that the candidate has a keen interest in 1) analytical laboratory/mineral characterization techniques, 2) optimization and maintenance of analysis equipment, and 3) the fine details related to method development. It is also crucial that the candidate has a willingness to perform a wide range of tasks, involving both complicated and routine analyses as necessary. Knowledge of geology/mineralogy with a background in optical mineralogy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques is beneficial.
JOB SCOPE/DIMENSIONS
Safely conduct laboratory testing in an accurate and timely manner, with a focus on detail and problem solving. Tests are performed on a variety of analytical instruments including:
Spectroscopic techniques (i.e., optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and FTIR spectroscopy)
Mineral particle characterization techniques (i.e., analyses for particle size distribution, surface area, density, and color/brightness).
Participate in routine sample preparation techniques which may involve working with acids, strong solvents, and crushing/grinding of rock lumps or chips.
Devise creative ways to prepare and analyze samples for non-routine analyses beyond existing methods or standard operating procedures, especially for specific customer issues or research support. Participate in method development and documentation.
Provide support to Quality and Product Stewardship/Regulatory departments with respect to mineral analyses, data retrieval, and analysis of impurities. General interest in regulatory affairs is necessary.
Prepare concise reports in a timely manner, documenting results and drawing conclusions.
Interact with personnel from various mine/milling sites (may include occasional travel).
Participate in administrative type tasks, such as sample login, archiving of samples and data, safety and quality system support, calibration of instruments, and posting relevant data and procedures to analytic SharePoint pages. Coordinate with external laboratories as necessary.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience requirements:
Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Geology, Mineralogy, Chemistry or related field.
2 years’ laboratory experience (can be associated with college degree work). Position is ideally suited for a new grad with interest in employment in an industry setting.
Background using laboratory instrumentation as outlined above, although training will be provided as necessary. Demonstrated experience in method development and willingness to learn new techniques. Occasional attendance in further education courses relating to specific laboratory analysis may be required.
Experience with writing standard operating procedures and/or working within quality systems.
Experience with, or interest in, participating in external standards setting organizations and professional associations relating to mining, laboratory analysis, and/or regulatory issues.
Knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics:
