TESTING BY APPOINTMENT ONLY: This position requires passage of a written test. You will be contacted by Human Resources regarding a testing date and time if all your supporting documentation is attached to your application.
The written test will be held at the Magnolia School District Office (2705 W. Orange Ave., Anaheim, CA 92804).

DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Supervisor or Designee, independently operates a school bus or transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule; transports students to and from school, and on special event trips; performs daily inspections of a bus or transportation equipment; and performs related work as necessary or required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

- Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule;
- Transports students to and from school;
- Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and at study trip destinations;
- Conducts end of route inspection of bus interior ensuring all passengers have been vacated;
- Stops traffic and escorts students across streets, when necessary;
- Maintains bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, and inspects and reports any and all mechanical defects or malfunctions;
- Attends and participates in transportation, safety and in-service training workshops and meetings;
- Adheres to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior and public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns;
- Completes the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, and type of trip;
- Completes and maintains written directions for routes;
- Sweeps, cleans and refuels buses;
- Transports students with special needs;
- Administers first aid as required;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF ADDITIONAL DUTIES MAY INCLUDE
Midday Routes
- Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned midday routes in accordance with an established time schedule.
Custodial Work at District Sites
- Cleans, sweeps, scrubs, refinishes and polishes floors;
- Dusts, and cleans furniture, woodwork, and fixtures;
- Empties and cleans all recyclable and waste receptacles;
- Cleans whiteboards, washes windows and walls;
- Vacuums and shampoos carpets;
- Assembles and adjusts furniture;
- Moves and arranges furniture;
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and other related custodial equipment;
- Performs non-technical repairs to buildings and equipment;
- Participates in the cleaning of buildings and grounds;
- Locks and unlocks doors, gates, windows, storerooms and secures facilities;
- Assists custodian with daily tasks at site;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Warehouse and Delivery
- Receives, prepares and delivers district supplies to all sites, including but not limited to mail, textbooks, furniture, food and kitchen supplies;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Fleet Cleaning
- Cleans (interior and exterior), washes and waxes District buses and other District vehicles.
Bus Drivers performing additional duties may be required to operate a variety of warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, carts and dollies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and California Administrative Code, Title 13 applicable to the transportation of school students;
- Basic preventive maintenance requirements of automotive equipment;
- Red Cross First Aid Handbook;
- CHP Bus Driver Handbook 82.7;
- Commercial Drivers Handbook;
- Safe driving practices;
- Current District technology and software.
Ability to:
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality;
- Drive a school bus and other district vehicles in a safe and effective manner;
- Maintain the safety and order among school students on a school bus, and at designated stops;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
- Pass a required physical examination as defined by current local, state and federal laws;
- Load and unload students with special needs;
- Establish and maintain effective, respectful and cooperative working relationships with school staff, colleagues, supervisors and the public;
- Comply with current local, state and federal school transportation regulations and laws;
- Be aware of surrounding work environment and adapt as needed;
- Work in a team environment or large group;
- Take on new responsibilities and adapt to changing situations.
Experience:
- Completion of a school bus driver training program.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Post-secondary Education – Preferred;
- Possess and maintain current valid Safety and Sanitation license, required if assigned to food delivery;
- New hires must possess and maintain a current Safety and Sanitation license within four (4) months for job requirement, if assigned to food delivery;
- Pass a rigorous District test related to the field applied.
Licenses and Certification Required
- California Class B operator’s license with school bus and passenger endorsements;
- California Highway Patrol School Bus Driver’s certificate, with no equipment restriction or the ability to obtain this certification during the one year probationary period;
- DMV form DL51;
- Employees in this classification are subject to random drug testing;
- First Aid Certification (Highway Patrol or Red Cross);
- Forklift operator's certification (preferred).
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in an outdoor environment driving a school bus to various locations and has direct contact with public and students. The employee’s primary responsibility is working with students/staff during the school day and may involve working with high volume and tight schedules and deadlines. This position may involve frequent interruption and direct contact with staff, students and the public; a high volume of responsibilities that may require working without direct and/or constant supervision; and working in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate to occasionally loud.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical and mental requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.
- Drives a vehicle;
- May require working split shifts, extended hour/day assignments;
- Works inside and outside;
- Works with loud noises and vibration;
- Exposed to fumes, gases, chemicals, odors, machinery with moving parts, and moving vehicles;
- Frequently exposed to minor, occasionally severe, contagious diseases;
- Rendering physical assistance to passengers to safely lift, carry, push, pull and otherwise move objects up to 60 pounds. For heavier items, assistance should be requested.
- Frequently sits, climbs stairs, maintains balance, stoops, bends, kneels, and reaches over head;
- Uses both hands, feet and legs simultaneously;
- Repetitively twists and exerts pressure with arms, wrists and hands;
- Hearing and speaking abilities to exchange information, monitor students and communicate via two-way radio and/or telephone;
- Has rapid mental/muscular coordination;
- Has depth perception, color vision, see’s small details and long distances.
