Position Overview: The Wastewater Engineer will be responsible for all of the incoming water, usage, and proper environmental treatment and discharge of water back to the municipal water system. This position will train and supervise Wastewater technicians and chemical handlers within the company.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage current IEPA Class K operators and train additional personnel for Class K exams.
  • Optimization of all incoming and outgoing water streams, make recommendations and modifications to enhance compliance while optimizing water usage throughout the facility.
  • Responsible for RO, water softening, and EDI processing equipment while utilizing maintenance department and outside vendors for support.
  • Review and optimization of filter cake solids disposal in order to control disposal costs.
  • Work closely with MIL's EH&S manager in terms of regulatory compliance, reporting, and system upsets during processing Wastewater.
  • Oversee, monitor and operate the wastewater treatment system in accordance with regulatory compliance and direct routine maintenance of the system.
  • Monitor pH, chemical levels, temperatures, and DI water quality in applicable processing tanks and perform chemical additions as needed.
  • Perform chemistry make-ups of various solutions as necessary.
  • Align with the Laboratory Supervisor to track chemical inventories, maintain chemical labeling and storage areas, and submit purchasing requisitions when needed.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of MIL's Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan (HWCP) and work alongside the EH&S Manager in the event of an emergency.
  • Assist the EH&S Manager during periodic inspections of hazardous waste containment, storage areas, and equipment used in the handling of hazardous waste.
  • Review and ensure calibrations of control devices relating to wastewater treatment and production processes are performed.
  • Analyze applicable data records and inspection logs for trends and preventative maintenance
  • Take part in on-going training sessions related to chemical processing and hazardous waste procedures and quality control.
  • Research and develop alternative water/chemical reclamation or reuse processes without disturbing current Wastewater system.
  • Develop contingency plan for future upgrades for current Wastewater system with CapEx budget team.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A detail-oriented, self-starting individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • In depth knowledge of materials used and wastes generated by the MIL chemical and metal finishing processes.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of applicable MIL general procedures as well as safety and environmental practices and procedures.
  • Ability to pass a classroom training session to satisfy federal and state introductory training requirements pertaining to the management of hazardous waste after 6 months.


Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • 5 years knowledge of Metal finishing processes or wastewater, disposal of chemicals.
  • Class K certification, or equivalent from alternate states than IL.
  • Degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or coursework. 
  • Experience operating a forklift preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and applicable data entry software applications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English is a plus.
  • Individual must be authorized to work in the U.S. 
  • This position requires access to ITAR-controlled information and materials. The successful candidate must meet all ITAR eligibility requirements, including being a U.S. person as defined by ITAR. 


Reports: The Wastewater Engineer will report to the Quality Control Manager and interface daily with Laboratory Techs, Chemical Operators, the Metal Finishing Department, and Quality Control personnel.


Hours: Day shift; must be flexible to work overtime and additional hours as needed to support the department in times of increased demand.
