Serves as a member of the surgical team working with surgeons, anesthesia providers, RNs and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery in accordance with Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and AST Standards of Practice.\n\nCertifications\nBLS\n\nPhysical Requirements\nContinuously stand/walk or lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs). Examples: Nurses, LPNs, and physical therapists.\n\nJob Duties and Performance Standards\nFunctions as a Surgical Technician in 5 of the 6 specialties demonstrating responsibilities that include assisting in direct patient care in the operating room. \nDemonstrates appropriate aseptic technique, i.e. scrub, gown and glove, draping, counting and set up according to department policy \nSelects and prepares the appropriate supplies and equipment for the surgical cases.\nOperates all surgical equipment \nOrganizes instrumentation and the sterile field. \nAnticipates needs of the surgeon, passes appropriate instruments, assists in exposure of the surgical field. \nPerforms all surgical counts consistently, including the “safety count”. \nPerforms wound closure (Subcutaneous and Skin) under the direct supervision of the surgeon. \n\nParticipates in general operating room activities to create a highly effective team. \nParticipates in PI activities, continuing education, planning and orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness. \nDemonstrates an awareness of the needs of the department and the assigned rooms and or tasks.
