POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the staking of all types of distribution lines and the preparation of work sketches for services to member-consumers and to assure the extension of electric service within the shortest reasonable time.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Stakes and draws staking sheets and makes material breakdown on overhead and underground distribution lines, and maintenance job orders in accordance with RUS specifications and NESC requirements.

B. Meets with member-consumers to explain costs, options, work to be accomplished and assess customer preferences. Obtains easements, highway permits, and other criteria.

C. Keeps engineer informed of large subdivisions, large electrical loads and other conditions.

D. Prepares sketches for construction, dispatch maps and one line diagrams, and verifies location of other utilities’ services; checks other utility contacts.

E. Assigns proper account numbers, map numbers and line section numbers to new accounts; also assigns rates and determines tax areas.

F. Learns certified territories and agreements with other utilities and reports to Engineering Manager any violation by adjoining electric utilities.

G. Obtains load information from consumers for new and additional services; checks flicker and overload conditions.

H. Observes all safety rules and works closely with service/line crews and other departments.

Required Skills

The Electrical Distribution Designer I shall be required to perform any other duties assigned in order to fulfill the objective of the Cooperative.

A. Member-Consumers: Respond to their inquiries and resolves problems or directs to supervisor or appropriate personnel.

B. General Public: Maintains good relations in all contacts with the general public.




Required Experience

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Job Knowledge and Training and Experience: Must be able to apply engineering theory in the design of electric distribution lines. This knowledge is normally obtained through the completion of a two-year engineering program leading to an associate’s degree or significant experience in distribution utility operations. Course work and/or experience should include surveying and drafting. Must be able to acquire within a reasonable time span a knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code, RUS Materials and Magic Valley's engineering policies and practices.


Equipment Operated: Must be able to operate assigned equipment including transits, rods and related engineering devices. A valid Texas Driver's License is required.


Abilities and Skills: Must be able to perform the activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the position description. Must be able to prepare a variety of reports with a high degree of accuracy. Good oral communication skills are required to work with a variety of member-consumers under differing circumstances. Must be able to communicate technical information clearly and accurately. Must be able to learn to use personal computers and computer terminals. Must be able to read and interpret system maps, line design books and other technical information. Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.


Physical Effort: Position activities require driving and getting in and out of vehicle several times during the day. Walking, standing and sitting are required in the completion of duties. Maneuvers around fences, traverses tall grasses and underbrush. Position requires the use of machete or other brush cutting tools.


Working Conditions: Sixty percent of position activities are performed in the field in all kinds of weather. Some uneven terrain. Exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, insect bites, snakes and dogs. Some overtime may be required.


After an offer of employment has been made, the cooperative requires a physical examination which will include both drug and alcohol testing.
