Math Tutor

Magellan Tutoring
Arlington, VA Part Time | Contractor
POSTED ON 9/24/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/21/2027

Magellan Tutoring is hiring math tutors for one-on-one, in-person work with middle and high school students around Arlington. $30–$40 per hour, you choose your own students and your own hours, and the work comes to you — no marketing, no chasing families, no hunting for clients.

The math

Pre-Algebra through Algebra II and Geometry, roughly grades 7 to 11 — the courses students most often need a second pass at. You don't need to cover every level. Tell us the highest course you're confident teaching and we'll match you accordingly.

What the work looks like

  • One-on-one sessions at students' homes or at a library near you
  • Working from what a student is actually stuck on — usually one unit, not the whole subject
  • Building the habits that show up in grades: showing work, checking answers, reading the question twice
  • Keeping parents informed in plain language
  • Teaching your own way. We'll give you curriculum resources if you want them, but nobody hands you a script.

What we're looking for

  • Confident command of middle and high school math through Algebra II and Geometry
  • Experience tutoring, teaching or coaching students in this age range
  • The patience to work with a student who has already decided they're bad at math
  • A car and a valid driver's license — sessions take place at students' homes and at local libraries
  • Willingness to complete a background check. Every tutor at Magellan Tutoring is screened before their first placement.
  • Based within about a 15-mile drive of Arlington, VA 22206

A plus, not a requirement

  • Pre-Calculus, Calculus or Statistics — we place these whenever we have someone who can teach them
  • SAT or ACT math prep experience. We run a separate SAT program, and tutors who can cross over work at the top of our range
  • Experience with students who have IEPs, 504 plans or other accommodations

The practical details

  • $30–$40 per hour. Higher-level coursework, test-prep capability and a track record of moving grades are what take you up the range
  • Independent contractor engagement (1099). You take the students who fit your schedule and pass on the ones who don't.
  • Steady work across the school year, following the semester calendar. Demand climbs around midterms and finals.
  • We handle matching, scheduling, billing and family communication
  • Referral bonus when a tutor you send us gets placed

About Magellan Tutoring

We're a Northern Virginia tutoring company built on one-to-one work with students who need someone in the room with them. We keep the administrative side off our tutors' plates so they can spend the hour teaching.

Applying
