What are the responsibilities and job description for the Help Desk Technician position at Magellan Financial?
This isn’t a standard support role. This is where your career in technology accelerates.
For the natural builder—the person who has tinkered with a home lab, built their own PCs, or spent weekends on Raspberry Pi projects—this is your entry point into a professional IT environment that values hands-on skill and a builder’s mindset above all else.
Magellan Financial is a high-growth national partner to the country's top independent financial advisors. Our success depends on speed, precision, and flawless execution. That starts with our internal technology. We are looking for an IT Help Desk Technician who takes immense pride in their craftsmanship—someone who sees a messy server rack or a slow workstation not as a problem, but as an opportunity to create order, efficiency, and impact.
This is more than a ticket queue. You are the first line of defense, the critical support layer that ensures our entire organization operates at peak productivity. You will not be siloed. You will have direct access to and mentorship from senior technicians, gaining exposure to networking, cloud infrastructure, and security in a fast-paced financial services environment. We are looking for a future leader, and we provide a clear, structured runway for you to advance from Help Desk I to Help Desk II and beyond.
If you are a curious, service-obsessed technologist who wants to learn the right way to build, maintain, and secure a modern IT stack, this is your opportunity.
What You Will Do
- Serve as the face of IT, providing first-class technical support for our internal teams and ensuring every employee feels empowered by their technology.
- Build, deploy, and maintain the hardware that runs our business, from imaging new workstations to performing component upgrades (RAM/SSD) and managing our asset inventory.
- Take ownership of our physical workspace, handling everything from desk setups and equipment mounting to meticulous cable management that reflects our commitment to excellence.
- Master core IT operations, managing user accounts, executing endpoint maintenance, and resolving issues across Windows 10/11, Microsoft 365, and A/V systems.
- Develop a foundational understanding of networking, troubleshooting connectivity issues related to DHCP, DNS, and IP routing under expert guidance.
- Document everything, contributing to our knowledge base and creating repeatable, scalable solutions that make the entire team smarter and faster.
What You Bring
- Required: A demonstrated and obsessive passion for technology, validated through personal projects, home labbing, PC building, or other hands-on tinkering.
- Required: A foundational knowledge of IP networking concepts (Subnetting, NAT, DHCP, DNS) and hands-on experience troubleshooting Microsoft Windows 10/11.
- Required: The ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, translating technical concepts into clear, patient communication for non-technical users.
- Required: Physical capability to lift 30 lbs and perform manual tasks including workstation assembly, equipment mounting, and cable routing with precision and care.
- Required: Reliable daily commute to our Topeka, KS headquarters.
- Preferred: 1–2 years of prior experience in a help desk or desktop support role.
- Preferred: Exposure to Microsoft 365/Azure AD, PowerShell scripting, or basic ITIL concepts.
The Rewards

- Career Trajectory: This role is designed as a direct path to more advanced responsibilities in systems, cloud, and network administration within our organization.
