Exceptional Children’s Program Teacher
The Exceptional Children’s (EC) Program teacher, under the direction of the Head of School and Assistant Administrator, will develop and provide specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities in accordance with state and federal regulations. The EC teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students in developing appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills in order to meet their IEP goals. This responsibility includes monitoring student progress and maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provides research-based specially designed instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP; create a positive learning experience for every student.
- Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
- Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
- Develops and implements annual Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
- Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with IEP team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
- Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
- Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
- Maintains student records, complies with School Board policies,and completes all reporting requirements in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities, and comply with state and federal education statutes.
Basic Qualifications Required:
- Minimum B.A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited institution, and certification in at least one area of disability as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
- Certification in a content area preferred
- Classroom teaching experience
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Strong knowledge of grade-level curriculum
- Knowledge of ECATS or similar reporting system
- Experience interpreting results from psychoeducation evaluations
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills
