Veterinary Assistant - Emergency Swing Shift

Madison Veterinary Specialists (MVS) is a privately owned, 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital dedicated to providing exceptional patient care through collaboration with primary care veterinarians. As an AAHA Accredited Referral Practice, our board-certified specialists in Critical Care, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, and Dermatology work alongside our Emergency team to provide advanced medical care around the clock.

We are looking for an experienced Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our growing Emergency Department. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys the fast pace of emergency medicine, thinks critically under pressure, and takes initiative to provide exceptional patient care. Our Emergency Veterinary Assistants are an essential part of the veterinary team, supporting doctors and technicians while helping provide timely, compassionate care to both emergency and hospitalized patients.

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following skills:

• Effectively triage incoming emergency patients and communicate patient status to the veterinarian or supervising technician.
• Facilitate outpatient appointments by obtaining patient histories, assisting with treatments, diagnostics, and procedures, and preparing patients for discharge.
• Admit hospitalized patients while ensuring accurate documentation and seamless communication with the veterinary team.
• Assist veterinarians and technicians with emergency procedures, diagnostics, treatments, anesthesia, CPR, and patient stabilization.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to the veterinarian or supervising technician.
• Safely restrain patients of varying sizes and temperaments while maintaining patient and team safety.
• Provide compassionate client communication, including patient updates, discharge instructions, and client education.
• Demonstrate excellent time management and the ability to prioritize multiple patients and competing responsibilities in a fast-paced emergency environment.
• Proficient in veterinary medical terminology and electronic medical records.
• Provide exceptional customer service and telephone communication while remaining calm, compassionate, and professional.
• Prepare and maintain treatment areas, procedure spaces, and equipment to support efficient patient care.
• Take initiative by anticipating the needs of the veterinary team and actively seeking opportunities to assist.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked treatment area.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Ability to safely lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials, infectious diseases, and zoonotic pathogens while following appropriate safety protocols.
