About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose Of Position

Under the direction of the Senior Executive Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator - Content is responsible for supporting the creation, management and coordination of high-quality communications content for all Madison Metropolitan School District stakeholders. This role works closely with the communications team and other departments to coordinate and deliver authentic, engaging and high-impact communications across multiple channels. This position will have a high degree of integrity, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Content Development (40%)
  • Assist with identifying story ideas to feature through MMSD’s communications platforms.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather necessary information, conduct interviews and produce content.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define content themes, messaging and methods of distribution.
  • Coordinate outside vendors to support content creation efforts.
  • Analyze content to ensure representation of schools, facilities, programs and people are equitable across the district.
  • Content Creation and Management: (40%)
  • Write engaging content for newsletters, website, social media and other communications platforms.
  • Write scripts, shoots and edits footage including interviews, engaging b-roll and promotional videos for campaigns and events.
  • Produces engaging videos for social media, events, website and other communications opportunities.
  • Shoots and edits photography including individual pictures, groups, presentations and large events.
  • Create engaging video shorts for social media and the website.
  • Maintain an up-to-date content library in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Ensure all content aligns with MMSD’s brand identity and messaging.
  • Review, edit and format copy of district communication materials to ensure accurate and professional information is being shared with MMSD stakeholders.
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity and alignment with the district’s strategic framework, mission and vision.
  • Communications (15%)
  • Assists with writing media releases.
  • Assists with emergency school notifications as needed.
  • Assists with website updates.
  • Conducts research and gathers information about Madison Metropolitan School District to create content.
  • Edit, write and proofread to ensure the highest quality of written communication.
  • Prepare reports and communication plans as needed.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork (5%)
  • Collaborates closely with the Communications Department team.
  • Participates in planning, goal setting and reporting activities of the Communications Department.
  • Serves on interdepartmental teams and committees as needed.
  • Ensures translation of documents.
  • Ensures cultural responsiveness in all marketing communications and a commitment to using an equity mindset.
  • Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
  • Complete any and all district required training.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide exemplary customer service to staff and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability with video and photo development and production.
  • Demonstrated ability with software such as Google, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a project from start to finish in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities projects, tasks, and appointments within specified time frames, some simultaneously, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing duties, tasks, and priorities.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Adept at quickly shifting priorities and at times into crisis communications mode, having full understanding of what needs to be accomplished in a short period of time.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective public information, communication, and engagement principles and practices.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze that research, and prepare clear and concise written reports as requested.
  • Ability to communicate through various communication mediums to obtain or provide information.
  • Ability to recognize opportunities for innovative communication and engagement approaches.
  • Ability to relate interpersonally with people in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of effective customer service practices.
  • Ability to use software and hardware technology efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to write with a high readability index score.
  • Ability to develop copy in Associated Press (AP) writing style.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of tools, including videotaping, camera, Facebook Live, etc.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to design and deliver culturally, linguistically, and socially equitable engagement and communication programming..

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field or commensurate experience in communications, journalism, or related field.
  • Experience using Associated Press Style.
  • Experience with content management systems and software.
  • Experience working for a school district, local government, public entity, or in a non-profit environment.
  • Experience with photography and videography, including editing.

Environmental Adaptability

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury.

Working Conditions

  • Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
  • Position requires working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
  • Certain positions within the District may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit.
