Position:
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and preventive servicing of Madison Materials LLC's fleet of commercial trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and support vehicles. This position ensures all equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and company safety standards. The Diesel Mechanic plays a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime while promoting a safe and efficient work environment.
Duties and responsibilities
Preventive Maintenance / Fleet Maintenance
· Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on commercial trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
· Conduct routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire services, brake repairs, shocks& struts replacement, and alignment adjustments to ensure optimal equipment performance.
· Maintain detailed service records of repairs performed, parts used, and maintenance schedules to ensure compliance with safety standards.
· Respond to breakdowns and emergency repairs
· Coordinate repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
· Assist drivers in understanding equipment issues and preventive maintenance practices.
· Communicate effectively with drivers, supervisors, dispatch, and management.
Diagnostics and Repair / DOT Compliance
· Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electrical system failures.
· Repair diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, suspensions, steering systems, braking systems, cooling systems, and fuel systems.
· Perform engine overhauls and component replacements as required.
· Troubleshoot electrical systems, sensor wiring, lighting, and charging systems.
· Repair air brake systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and DOT requirements.
· Acquire DOT annual inspections.
· Ensure all vehicles comply with FMCSA and DOT safety regulations.
· Correct all deficiencies identified during inspections
· Assist management during DOT audits and compliance reviews.
Shop Safety
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
· Properly use and maintain shop tools and equipment.
· Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
· Safely dispose of waste oil, filters, batteries, tires, and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
Qualifications/ Skills
· Education: Technical or vocational training in diesel technology is preferred.
· CDL preferred; ASE Heavy Truck Certifications and welding certification are a plus.
· Minimum five (5) years of diesel mechanic experience preferred. Experience working in a DOT-regulated fleet environment is strongly preferred.
· Specialized Knowledge: FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, fleet management, transportation logistics, and preventive maintenance requirements.
· Knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, trailers, and heavy equipment.
· Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.
· Excellent mechanical aptitude. Strong organizational and time management skills.
· Strong organizational and time management skills; effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Work independently with minimal supervision and prioritize multiple repairs in a fast-paced environment.
· Lift up to 75 pounds, stand, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces
Working conditions
Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop and outdoor environment.
Frequent exposure to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, loud noise, dust, grease, oil, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
Must safely use power tools, hand tools, welding equipment, and lifting devices.
Overtime and emergency callouts may be required.
