Overview
Our client, a mid-sized financial institution, is looking to bring on an Accounting Operations Assistant Controller to act as a key driver within their finance function. This is a highly visible “player/coach” role overseeing core accounting operations, owning the close process, and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting.
This individual will sit directly under senior finance leadership and act as a right hand in managing day-to-day accounting while also pushing process improvements, controls, and system enhancements. The environment is collaborative but fast-paced, with a strong emphasis on ownership and accountability.
Responsibilities
- Own and lead the monthly and quarterly close cycle, ensuring timelines and accuracy across all deliverables
- Oversee general ledger activity including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
- Drive the balance sheet reconciliation process, ensuring all accounts are properly supported and variances are resolved
- Review accounting across key business lines including lending activity, deposits, investment portfolios, and fixed/prepaid assets
- Ensure alignment and accuracy between subledgers and the general ledger across multiple systems
- Prepare and deliver internal financial reporting with clear commentary and variance analysis for leadership
- Strengthen and maintain internal controls in line with regulatory and audit requirements
- Partner cross-functionally with teams such as treasury, credit, and risk to ensure proper accounting treatment of complex transactions
- Oversee accounting for subsidiaries and manage consolidation activities
- Support accounting systems oversight, including configuration, testing, and automation initiatives
- Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements across accounting operations
- Act as main point of contact for auditors, coordinating requests and documentation
- Lead, develop, and mentor a team of accounting professionals
- Serve as backup to senior accounting leadership when needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience with strong exposure to financial close and GL ownership
- Prior team leadership or management experience required
- Background in banking, financial services, or public accounting (financial services clients) strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of accounting operations, controls, and reporting frameworks
- Experience working with ERP systems (GL platforms) and advanced Excel capabilities
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact across business lines
Salary : $150,000 - $190,000
