POSITION: Special Education Teacher Multidisciplinary Self-Contained, Secondary, Madison County GNETS Lighthouse Program at Madison County High School
Reports To: Principal and Special Education Director
Contract: 10 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a valid Georgia teaching certificate in Special Education. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to relate to and motivate all students to make learning of academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skills meaningful and effective. Applicants should be able to successfully collect data and progress monitor goals and objectives to inform IEPs. Applicants should be able to complete functional behavior assessments, write behavior intervention plans, and use data to inform problem-solving conversations and the implementation of interventions in the classroom. Applicants must be willing to maintain all licenses and certifications and participate in new training sessions as required by the job. Applicants should be able to operate standard office equipment, prepare and maintain accurate records, apply physical restraint protocols, and use established curriculum and instructional frameworks.
Physical Requirements: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.

Performance Responsibilities:
- Ensures instructional activities align with individualized learning plans and established lesson plans.
- Implements a proactive, consistent, and effective classroom management and behavior management system to effectively instruct students.
- Administers developmental assessments, subject-specific evaluations, and other standardized tests to assess student competency levels and inform the development of individualized education plans.
- Communicates regularly with parents and/or legal guardians regarding student progress, including expectations, achievements, identified IEP goals, recommended methods for improvement, and strategies for reinforcing classroom objectives within the home environment.
- Evaluates student progress toward established objectives, expectations, and goals, particularly those defined in the IEP (covering behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, and vocational abilities), to provide constructive feedback to students, parents, and administrative staff.
- Collaborates with instructional personnel, other school staff, parents, and various community stakeholders to enhance overall student outcomes and achieve defined classroom objectives in alignment with the school improvement plan.
- Provides advising services to students to improve performance, promote general well-being, develop problem-solving skills, and address a range of personal issues.
- Demonstrates instructional methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments, thereby providing an effective program that addresses individual student IEP goals.
- Offers guidance to assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers to maintain an effective classroom program and meet the diverse needs of individual students.
- Instructs students to enhance their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined curriculum.
- Manages student behavior, which includes completing Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and monitoring progress, to maintain a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Supervises students across various educational settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Participates in diverse meetings to convey and/or gather information necessary for the execution of duties.
- Prepares a variety of written documentation (e.g., grades, attendance records, anecdotal notes) to document student progress toward IEP goals and fulfill mandated requirements.
- Reports suspected child abuse or substance abuse to the assigned site administrator to maintain students' personal safety, uphold a positive learning environment, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Responds promptly to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct issues to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from various sources (e.g., other teachers, parents, administrators) to resolve issues, provide pertinent information, and/or offer direction.
- Collaborates with general education teachers for the effective implementation of individualized education plans.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the work unit.
