Position Overview
With little direct supervision, frequently at "satellite" locations, provides classroom instruction and assistance to defendants who are court-ordered to complete National Safety Council defensive driving courses. Ensures that course materials, teaching aids, and necessary classroom equipment are on hand to conduct assigned classes at assigned locations. Performs routine clerical tasks related to the administration of assigned classes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(All duties may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class)
- Instructs participants regarding safety rules and regulations governing National Safety Council defensive driving courses ensuring course materials, teaching aids are used properly and as required.
- Performs routine clerical tasks related to the administration of assigned classes including attendance and course completion documentation.
- Generate and distribute "certificates of completion" to course participants, and deliver these and other documents to the Alternative Sentencing and Release or Court Clerk's Office as may be required.

Education and Experience
- Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a high school diploma.
- Must be a certified law enforcement officer.
- Prior speaking, lesson plan development and classroom teaching experience are preferred.
- Ability to speak clearly and effectively communicate information and ideas, so others will understand.
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service.; this includes clients' needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects

Physical Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- The person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone.
- The person in this position must be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must maintain a good driving record with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
- Certification by the National Safety Council as a DDC Instructor for assigned classes, or willingness/ability to obtain certification is required.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony, crime of moral turpitude, or a driving offense involving alcohol or other drugs.
- Applicant must pass pre-employment drug test.
