Position Title: School Resource Officer SRO Lead

Reports To: Director of Safety and Security

FLSA Status: Exempt

Work Schedule: 185 days plus additional hours/days for assigned events (80 hours)

Position Summary

The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a certified law enforcement officer within the school environment, responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors. The SRO patrols school property, investigates incidents, responds to emergencies, and provides educational programs and public assistance. This role requires independent judgment and the ability to take decisive action in high-pressure situations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Tier 1 Law Enforcement Officer certification from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

  • Minimum age: 21 years.

  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and a safe driving record.

  • Ability to legally carry and use firearms and law enforcement equipment.

  • In-depth knowledge of police procedures, local geography, laws, and regulations.

  • Experience with evidence handling, radio codes/procedures, and emergency response.

  • Proficiency in oral and written communication, including report writing and public speaking.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.

  • Availability for on-call emergencies, extended hours, evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain security across school campuses.

  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws; investigate crimes occurring on school property.

  • Present educational programs on crime prevention, drug resistance, and school safety.

  • Respond to emergencies and serve as a first responder during incidents.

  • Monitor surveillance systems and communicate potential threats or emergencies.

  • Act as liaison between the school, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations.

  • Provide support and mentorship to students, helping address behavioral or social concerns.

  • Enforce traffic and parking regulations on school grounds.

  • Investigate accidents, collect evidence, and prepare related documentation.

  • Assist in controlled substance investigations, including identification and seizure.

  • Perform arrests, searches, and transport of suspects when necessary.

  • Maintain professional uniform appearance and ensure vehicle/equipment readiness.

  • Provide testimony and documentation for legal proceedings.

  • Attend and support community engagement activities and public relations efforts.

  • Maintain compliance with all SRO protocols and guidelines outlined in the district SRO Manual.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or district leadership.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Interview and counsel students, staff, or community members as needed.

  • Create and distribute informational brochures or public service announcements.

  • Participate in school and district safety drills and threat assessment processes.

  • Assist with planning and training for emergency preparedness and crisis response.

SRO Lead Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with BRIVO
  • Assist and/or Lead Safety Meetings
  • Data Collection (multiple points)
  • Threat assessment
  • Cases
  • Assist with weather-related activities to ensure the school is safe to open
  • Assist with planning monthly meetings and Professional Development opportunities
  • Ensure meeting minutes are kept up and shared with the group
  • Reports
  • Liaison with the Sheriff's Department as decided by the Director
  • Designee for the Director in their absence
  • Other duties as needed to assist the Director

Special Considerations / Physical Demands

  • Must be physically and mentally capable of handling high-stress or potentially dangerous situations.

  • Work is performed in a school environment with frequent mobility throughout buildings and grounds.

  • May involve lifting or restraining individuals in emergency situations.

  • Required to wear a uniform and maintain professional grooming standards.
