Job Goal: Provides support to Special Education Teachers, General Education Teachers, and Paraprofessionals to ensure that the individual needs of students with disabilities are met to have the best chance to succeed in the regular education classroom. 

 

Qualifications:

  1. Must hold a valid Alabama teaching certificate with certification in special education.
  2. Master’s degree from accredited college or university in Special Education required.
  3. Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience in area of special education.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To:  Special Education Coordinator

 

Background Check Required: (Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old. A new background check is required for anyone new to Madison City Schools, regardless of the recency of the ABI and FBI background checks.

Employees are expected to model professional conduct, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with students, use district-approved channels for communications, and avoid interactions that could be perceived as favoritism, grooming, or undue familiarity. Staff must promptly report suspected child abuse or neglect to law enforcement authorities as required by Alabama law. Compliance with these expectations is a condition of employment.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  2. The ability to work as a team member and to work independently.
  3. The ability to read, analyze and interpret reports is required.
  4. Initiative, self-reliance, professional attitude and appearance are necessary attributes.
  5. Knowledge of best practices, methods and techniques in supporting students in the general education classroom.

Essential Functions:

  1. Oversee compliance with all state and federal mandates including but not limited to IDEA.
  2. Work collaboratively with school administrators, Coordinator of Special Education, school level Special Education teachers and staff to promote growth and continuity throughout the district.
  3. Work collaboratively with Special Education teachers focusing on intended results including initial referral and annual meetings, transfers, amendments, and re-evaluation meetings.
  4. Support all Special Education teachers with Special Education requirements
  5. Provide information and support to Principals and Special Education Coordinator on all matters of relevance.
  6. Maintain current knowledge of developments in the area of Special Education and Special Education Tracking System (SETS)
  7. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, process and regulations of Special Education.
  8. Ability to manage personnel and required meetings to support and successfully carry out the function of the special education program.
  9. Strong leadership skills
  10. Works cooperatively with others.
  11. Attends professional meetings, writes reports, and maintains records.
  12. Effectively communicates with parents concerning their child’s educational program.
  13. Coaches and Mentors teachers and paraprofessionals.
  14. Attend and assist in IEP meetings as needed.
  15. Consults with OT, PT, Speech Therapists and other Special Education Professionals.
  16. Consults with teachers to adapt instructional methods to continuously implement best inclusion practices.
  17. Training and supporting paraprofessionals in assisting students with disabilities in the general education classroom.
  18. Assist in improving the instructional program through classroom observation, visitation, and department meetings.
  19. Assists in developing individualized education plans.
  20. Works with parents, campus personnel, and other central office administrators to analyze and solve problematic situations in the earliest stage possible.
  21. Monitors instructional processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes.
  22. Demonstrates professional ethics and confidentiality.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment: 202 days (full year)

Evaluation: According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines.

 

Salary Range: According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year)
