What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrician (Trainee Eligible) position at Madison, City of (WI)?
This is skilled journey level electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and other systems and equipment found in a wide range of municipal facilities operated and maintained by the Engineering Division. The primary focus of this position is electrical work related to Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers and related infrastructure.
City Engineering’s electricians and electrician trainees are deeply involved in the Green Power program. Within the Green Power program, this position will teach unskilled trainees basic electrical skills while assisting on Solar Electric PV, EV Charger and LED Lighting install projects.
These positions work exclusively within the City of Madison, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with some opportunities for overtime. All necessary tools, equipment and vehicles for the job are provided by the city. It is our goal to hire a licensed electrician for this position. This position is trainee-eligible and we would be open to considering applicants that meet trainee-level qualifications. Employees in a trainee role participate in a training and career progression program. An individualized training program developed for the Trainee will provide for classroom and on-the job training to allow for and guide advancement from an Electrician Trainee Level 1 to an Electrician.
Initial placement in the trainee progression is determined based on training and experience at time of hire. An Electrician Trainee Level 1 is expected to complete the full training program in two (2) years. Upon successful completion, the position will be reclassified as an Electrician.

Work is characterized by considerable judgment and discretion in laying out and performing assigned work and in providing related leadership to other, lower level crew members and trainees. The work is performed under the direction of a master electrician.

- Review project plans and drawings and ensure that assigned projects are built according to design.
- Participate in training crewmembers in work to be performed.
- Oversee crewmembers to complete projects within established policies and procedures.
- Determine the materials, methods and tools involved in the construction or repair of electrical systems and components in a wide variety of municipal facilities.
- Participate in the more judgmental and/or discretionary elements of electrical trades work, to include needs assessment, problem resolution, system design, etc.
- Establish work priorities consistent with program objectives and assume responsibility for the development of responsive procedures, methods and timetables.

This is skilled electrical construction work assisting higher level staff in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and other systems and equipment. Work is characterized by considerable judgment and discretion in laying out and performing assigned work and in providing related leadership to other, lower level crew members and trainees. The work is performed under the direction of a licensed journey or master electrician.

- Lay out and plan work for smaller scale jobs as assigned by and under the general supervision of City licensed electricians.
- Perform other related work as assigned.
This is responsible, technical and semi-skilled electrical construction work assisting higher level staff in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and other systems and equipment. Work at this level includes working in a leadworker capacity for basic or smaller installation, maintenance and repair functions. Employees in this classification may perform complex aspects of this work independently. Employees work directly with licensed electricians to continue developing the skills necessary to successfully install electrical systems (eg PV, EV charging systems and LED lighting, etc.). Trainees will also work with experienced facilities maintenance technicians to learn basic building maintenance and repair tasks. The work is performed under the direction of a licensed journey or master electrician.
- Install, modify and repair PV electric systems, EV charging systems, lighting, controls and other electrical systems and components in City-owned facilities.
- Prioritize work assignments as required to meet established objectives.
- Observe and assist experienced skilled tradespersons in the performance of preventive maintenance activities, repairs and installations.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance activities. Report issues. Observe and assist experienced technicians in troubleshooting and repair.
- Respond to routine customer service call requests during regular business hours.
- Independently perform routine assignments in connection with the operation, maintenance and installation of PV electric, building lighting systems, EV charging systems and other electrical building systems.
- Participate in classroom, online, self-study and on-the-job training activities.
- Maintain effective working relationships.
- Provide leadership to less experienced crewmembers and trainees, overseeing a small crew of permanent and hourly workers performing basic or smaller-scale installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Serve as part of a crew on larger projects.
- Perform other related work as assigned.
To be considered as an Electrician you will have the following:
- Journey-level electrician certification/license; and
- Two (2) years of journey-level electrician experience which included some experience in the repair and maintenance of electrically driven motors and pumping equipment.
- Master Electrician license
- Varied semi-skilled electrical, HVAC and/or other mechanical installation and repair work.
- Installation, operation and maintenance of basic electric equipment as used in commercial, residential, municipal, or related facilities or installations.
- Occupational safety requirements.
- Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Expected to respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours.
- Submittal of an application for Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services Registered Electrician registration within first 10 days of employment is a condition of continued employment.
- Wisconsin Journey Electrician's License is required at the Electrician level.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to skillfully operate hand and power tools and testing equipment common in the electrical trade.
- Ability to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and engage in strenuous physical labor.
- Ability to frequently walk, sit, bend, twist, squat, kneel, stoop and lift arms overhead to perform work for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work on roofs.
- Will be expected to work around wires that may contain potentially dangerous electrical current.
- Will be expected to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
