Job Description:
The Veterinary Assistant plays an essential role at Madison Cat Project (MCP). They support the medical team by helping provide high-quality medical and surgical care for program cats and public patients. This position assists with daily medications and treatments, animal handling, surgical flow, cleaning, and other administrative tasks. The role requires professional and compassionate communication with staff, volunteers, and members of the public.
Veterinary Assistant Job Duties & Requirements:
- High attention to detail and record keeping
- Computer-based scheduling and communication with fosters and clients
- Prepare cats for surgery
- Proficiency in anesthesia monitoring
- Recover patients after surgery
- Safely and humanely handle and restrain cats of all temperaments
- Perform intake exams to identify signs of injury or disease
- Follow protocols to ensure healthy population of resident cats
- Administer preventative care to rescue cats and coordinate exams
- Be able to give SQ or IM injections and oral medications
- Collect and prepare laboratory samples
- Manage inventory of medical and surgical supplies
- Clean and maintain the clinic
- Ability to lift and carry at least 40lbs
- Available for medicating shelter animals over weekends and holidays as needed
- Strong support for the mission of Madison Cat Project
- Other duties as needed to ensure smooth operation of the clinic and shelter as a whole
