Macon R-1 School District is accepting applications for a Director of Maintenance, with employment starting in early 2026.
The Director of Maintenance & Facilities provides leadership and oversight for the upkeep, repair, and safe operation of all district buildings and grounds. This position manages maintenance and custodial staff, schedules preventative work, coordinates capital projects, and ensures compliance with state and federal safety regulations to maintain an optimal learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and supervise all building and grounds maintenance, custodial, and repair operations
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems
- Oversee and evaluate maintenance staff, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Prepare and manage department budgets; monitor expenditures for cost effectiveness
- Coordinate facility upgrades, construction projects, and vendor/contractor work
- Maintain accurate records of work orders, inspections, and compliance reports
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, fire safety, and other regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with administrators to prioritize maintenance needs and support school activities
- Assist in development of long-range facility improvement plans and capital projects
- Respond to emergency situations (after hours as needed) to protect property and safety
- Responsible for the setting up and tearing down of equipment during special events; i.e., graduation, conferences, concerts, etc.
- Will be available to fire and police departments on a 24-hour call basis when building or ground alarms sound
- Assists in snow removal
- Orders and receives supplies and equipment, and maintains necessary inventories
- Assumes responsibility for the general security of the buildings
- Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety of the buildings
- Performs emergency repair services as necessary
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction, or related field preferred
- Significant experience (5 years) in building/facility maintenance with progressive supervisory responsibility; public-sector or school-district experience strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems
- Familiarity with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and preventive maintenance practices
- Budget preparation and project management skills
- Ability to lead and motivate staff, establish priorities, and meet deadlines
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Physical ability to inspect sites, climb ladders, lift moderate loads, and respond to emergencies
- Demonstrates aptitute for the successful completion of tasks
This position is a 12 month/260 day position.
