The Traffic Signal Electronic Technician is responsible for applying electrical, electronic and fiber optic technology system techniques to traffic signal systems to include repair, maintenance, upgrades, and installation of sophisticated traffic signal systems, fiber optic, CCTV, signs, and markings; as outlined in the Manual on Uniformed Traffic Control devices and city, county, state and federal regulations.
  • Performs troubleshooting, repair and testing of all malfunctioning traffic devices, CCTV, and fiber optic systems.
  • Repairs traffic signal equipment to the component level.
  • Keeps accurate repair records and log of equipment.
  • Interprets blueprints, schematics, and drawings.
  • Performs assembly and acceptance testing of all new traffic control devices, fiber optic devices and systems.
  • Trains and assists other technicians in diagnosis and proper corrective methods and solutions of field service technical problems.
  • Maintains the necessary replacement parts stock levels.
  • Maintain library of technical manuals and publications as related to existing and new equipment installations.
  • Performs utility locates using locator equipment and report via utility locate services.
  • May be required to learn and become proficient in GIS mapping of facilities and infrastructure.      

The Traffic Signal Electronic Technician should possess, at a minimum, a High School Diploma or GED supplemented by college, military, or vocational training in electronic theory and practice; four (4) years of experience in industrial, commercial or Military experience in related applications and techniques of electronic devices and systems; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License, Class B with no air brake restrictions or obtain license within six (6) months of appointment to position.
  • Must be certified by Georgia DOT on traffic control and flagging procedures within six (6) months of appointment to position.
  • Experienced in fiber optic installation and maintenance
  • Experienced in CCTV installation and maintenance
  • Experienced in operation of OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) test equipment.
  • Four years' experience in traffic signal equipment maintenance and installation.
  • Completion of appropriate training courses through the International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA).
  • Must be available for 24 hour emergency call as needed.

  • Knowledge of advanced principles and theory of electrical/electronic techniques as applied to traffic signal systems.
  • Knowledge of sophisticated fiber optic cables, splice details, fiber testing, documenting, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of all fiber optic systems.
  • Knowledge of CCTV and all related systems.
  • Knowledge of microprocessor's and related digital electronics equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and precautions required by electrical hazards and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, tools and vehicles of the trade.
  • Knowledge of a personal computer and relevant programs.
  • Skilled and proficient in operating the fiber optic fusion splicer
  • Skilled and proficient in terminating fiber optic fibers.
  • Skilled and proficient in terminating coaxial cables.
  • Skilled and proficient in repairing all related equipment.
  • Skilled and proficient in installing and operating specialized network computer software.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and explain wiring diagrams, schematics, technical drawings, etc.
  • Ability to analyze, locate, and correct troubles efficiently in systems and devices used in traffic signal systems.
  • Ability to instruct and train others in troubleshooting techniques as relates to this trade.
  • Skill in the safe use of materials, tools, vehicles, and equipment used in the trade.
  • Ability to work effectively with members of all levels within the organization.
