What are the responsibilities and job description for the Editorial Assistant, Flatiron position at Macmillan Learning?
The Editorial and Publishing Assistant will provide a high level of administrative and editorial support for the Associate Publisher and Publishing Director of Flatiron Books, including assistance with a nonfiction list as well as overall departmental support.
What you'll do:
- Support for the Publishing Director's list of books, which spans a variety of categories including issue-driven nonfiction, wellbeing, science, psychology, personal narrative food, and lifestyle.
- Editorial project management, including monitoring deadlines, production schedules, and calendars; handling correspondence with authors and agents; and coordinating internally across departments (legal, art, marketing, publicity, etc).
- Managing internal processes and workflows, including: drafting tip sheets and copy, metadata input, generating contract requests, and overseeing all aspects of the production process.
- Participation and support in the acquisition process, including: logging and reading submissions, drafting rejection letters, generating p&ls, participating in editorial meetings, conducting market research.
- Assistance with seasonal planning for Flatiron books, including and communicating editorial and sales deadlines to the staff.
- Monitoring internal systems to ensure title information is correct and current.
- Organizing and participating in publishing and channel strategy meetings, and assisting with meeting prep and follow-up.
- Departmental assistance with sales reporting and research
- Ad-hoc support functions for publishers, marketers, editors, and operations staff as required.
What you'll bring:

- Ability to work both independently and in project-based settings, with attention to deadlines and shared responsibility
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as writing and critical reading skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn new systems
- Interest in a broad range of nonfiction and attention to cultural trends and news
Ideal Expereince:
- Some publishing experience preferred (administrative or editorial positions, internships)
- Demonstrated interest in books and the book publishing industry
This role will have an annual salary of $47,500.
