Position Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer II will play a key role in designing, developing, and refining mechanical components and assemblies for our robotic surgical systems. This role emphasizes concept design, troubleshooting/root cause analysis, and DFMEA, ensuring robust and high-quality mechanical solutions.

Working under the guidance of the Staff Mechanical Engineer & Team Lead within the R&D department, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring advanced robotic technologies from concept through commercialsation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to concept and detailed mechanical design of robotic system components and subassemblies.
  • Apply DFMEA methodologies to identify potential failure modes and ensure design robustness.
  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis for mechanical and system-level issues.
  • Develop prototypes, perform mechanical testing, and support verification and validation activities.
  • Utilize CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to model and analyze designs.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers to ensure design integration and manufacturability.
  • Support design reviews, documentation, and design transfer activities to manufacturing.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure component quality, manufacturability, and timely delivery.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support compliance with FDA and ISO standards.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Strong foundation in concept design, DFMEA, and troubleshooting/root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks) for design and documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with precision mechanisms, actuation systems, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Understanding of regulatory and quality standards (FDA, ISO) for medical devices or similarly regulated industries.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and manage multiple design tasks.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience designing electro-mechanical systems or robotic mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis.
  • Exposure to the full product development lifecycle, from concept to production.
  • Prior work experience in medical device, robotics, or high-precision engineering environments.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Typically 3–8 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in robotics or medical devices.
