Position Summary:
The Acute Care Manager provides comprehensive clinical, operational, financial, and regulatory leadership for the Acute Care inpatient unit and Swing Bed program within a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This role is accountable for safe, high-quality, patient-centered care delivery while maintaining compliance with CMS CAH Conditions of Participation, Michigan regulations, DNV accreditation standards, and payer requirements. The Acute Care Manager has 24/7 accountability for the Acute Care unit, including responsibility for safe staffing, patient flow, care coordination, utilization review, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and oversight for the Acute Care inpatient unit and Swing Bed program.
- Maintains 24/7 accountability for unit operations, patient safety, staffing, and quality outcomes.
- Ensures safe staffing levels and oversees development and management of the staffing schedule.
- Assists nursing staff on the unit as needed during periods of increased census or acuity.
- Oversees Swing Bed program operations and patient status determination (inpatient, observation, extended recovery).
- Provides leadership to Care Managers and Utilization Review Nurse.
- Works closely with hospitalists and surgical teams to ensure smooth care coordination and bed flow.
- Reviews daily charges and collaborates with revenue cycle to ensure accurate billing and prior authorizations.
- Works closely with Quality and Risk departments to ensure daily incident report closure and achievement of quality goals.
- Leads DNV accreditation readiness and regulatory compliance efforts.
- Develops and implements process improvement and auditing plans.
- Collaborates with union stewards to ensure adherence to union agreements and avoid grievances.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary team meetings and promotes a culture of safety and teamwork.
- Utilizes evidence-based workflows and contemporary best practices.
- Acts as a Policy Owner and responsible for acute care –related policies and ensures every two year reviews.
- Responsible for capital budget.
- Responsible for the Acute Care Quality Dashboard, including development of meaningful metrics and monthly data collection and reviews as well as reporting to the Quality & Safety Task Force quarterly and monthly data review w/CNO.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Current unrestricted RN license in the State of Michigan.
- Minimum of 3–5 years acute care nursing experience.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of CAH regulations, care management, and patient status requirements.
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Epic electronic medical record experience (super user preferred).
- Experience in a Critical Access Hospital and Utilization Review preferred
- Experience in a unionized healthcare environment.
- Certification in Nursing Leadership and/or Medical-Surgical Nursing.
Pay: From $80,000.00 per year
