Set Up Machinist - Mori Seiki NT DCG Turn-Mill Specialist

Machine Specialties, Inc. (MSI) is a leading contract machining and metal finishing company that designs and manufactures sophisticated, cost-effective solutions to meet our clients’ most demanding challenges. We manufacture precision components for the aerospace, space, and defense industries. Our company is located in Whitsett, NC, about 8 miles outside of Greensboro, NC.

We are searching for an experienced CNC Set-Up Machinist who specializes in multi-axis mill/turn (turn-mill) machining to set up and run our Mori Seiki NT DCG integrated mill/turn centers. This is a specialized, hands-on role for a machinist who can independently take a job from blueprint to first article on these machines — not just load and run. This is an hourly position reporting to the Manager of the appropriate department.

About the Machines You’ll Run

Our Mori Seiki NT DCG machines are integrated mill/turn centers — they combine full turning and full multi-axis milling in a single setup. If you have set up and run these or similar turn-mills, you know exactly what makes them different from a standard lathe or machining center:

• Fanuc control — integrated turning and milling in one work envelope, running on Mori Seiki’s MAPPS control (Fanuc-based).
• B-axis milling spindle — a swiveling B-axis milling spindle with a built-in motor, so you’re programming and setting tools for true 5-axis simultaneous work, not just indexed positions.
• Main sub-spindle — main and second (sub) spindle with synchronized part transfer — you’ll set up done-in-one work, handing the part from the main spindle to the sub-spindle to finish the back side.
• DCG (Driven at the Center of Gravity) — Driven at the Center of Gravity design that suppresses vibration for high-speed, high-accuracy cutting — which is exactly why holding aerospace tolerances on these machines takes an experienced setup hand.
• Combined tooling — live/rotary tooling and turning tools together, plus a lower turret on some models — tool setup, offsets, and collision awareness across turning and milling in the same program.

What You’ll Do

• Independently set up Mori Seiki NT DCG turn-mill centers from the blueprint — work-holding (chucks, collets, bar feed), tooling, offsets, and program — and bring the first article to print.
• Set and load all turning and live-milling tools per set-up instructions, and dial in B-axis positions, tool geometry, and work/tool offsets.
• Read and edit G & M code and MAPPS conversational programs at the control; prove out and optimize programs for cycle time and quality.
• Set up and verify main-spindle-to-sub-spindle transfer and synchronized (done-in-one) operations.
• Work to close tolerances and correlated dimensions, using probing and in-process gauging to hold aerospace-level accuracy.
• Machine to dimensions and maintain close tolerances while keeping production on schedule.
• Troubleshoot setups, tooling, and part quality; make adjustments and document what you change.
• Communicate with engineering and programming to improve setups and operations, and help develop best practices on the mill-turns.

What We’re Looking For

• Hands-on experience setting up and running multi-axis mill/turn (turn-mill) machines — Mori Seiki / DMG MORI NT DCG experience strongly preferred; comparable Mazak Integrex, Okuma Multus, Nakamura, or similar turn-mill experience will be considered.
• Fanuc control fluency — able to read, edit, and prove out programs at the machine.
• 5 years of CNC machining experience in a job shop, preferred.
• Experience with 5-axis CNC machines, and comfort managing turning and milling in a single setup.
• High level of blueprint reading and GD&T; strong grasp of tolerances, offsets, and correlated dimensions.
• Detail oriented with proven analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with conversational controls is a plus.
• Able to meet deadlines while working under minimal supervision, with a positive, professional, customer-focused attitude.
• Knowledge and use of hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

Available Shifts

• Days: Monday–Thursday 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Friday 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM
• Nights: Monday–Thursday 5:00 PM – 5:00 AM (15% shift premium)
• Weekend Days: Friday–Sunday 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (10% shift premium)
• Weekend Nights: Friday–Sunday 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM (20% shift premium)

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
• Able to stand for extended periods (up to 10 hours daily).
• Able to work 45 hours per week.
