What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Engineer position at MAC Water Technologies, Inc.?
Staff Engineer
MAC Water Technologies, Inc.
Kansas City, Kansas
Full-time, on-site with project travel
Tired of working for a large corporation? Tired of doing the same designs over and over? Tired of only working on a small portion of projects and have the drive to be a part of concept through design through fabrication through start-up and maintaining projects without handing the project to others? If so, this may be the opportunity that makes your career enjoyable.
About the company
MAC Water Technologies, Inc. is a locally owned, engineering-led manufacturer of water and wastewater treatment equipment and chemical programs. We design, build, install, and maintain systems out of our Kansas City, Kansas facility.
Work covers equipment and chemical treatment applications of all kinds from high-purity water to associated wastewater mainly for pharmaceutical, food, labs, and heavy industrial clients. Product lines include softeners with brine reclaim, reverse osmosis and membrane systems, deionization, ultraviolet, disinfection, chemical feed, clean-in-place, wastewater reuse, sludge generation and management, and aeration systems. The model is application-first: match the technology to the water, not a brand catalog.
The role
No day or project are the same. Some days you will look up and price what parts are needed to make repairs, work directly with customers to design a fully integrated solution to solve their problems, to managing projects, to laying out our data sheets and manual,
You will not be the only engineer on the team. Licensed engineers are available to review work, answer questions, and to provide training and guidance when needed. Everyone’s work is available for all to see for a true group effort to help ensure the World’s wise use of our water resource. You will NOT be micromanaged.
What you will do
- Design treatment systems: reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, deionization, softeners, brine reclaim, filtration, ultraviolet and other disinfection, chemical feed, clean-in-place, and wastewater process units.
- Size pumps, vessels, membranes, resins, media, piping, and instrumentation. Produce P&IDs, layouts, equipment lists, and fabrication packages for the Kansas City shop.
- Work directly with customers to interpret their needs, troubleshoot boilers, cooling, high-purity, and wastewater systems.
- Work directly with sales to solve the customer’s problems by developing a truly integrated solution.
- Calculate and compare capital, operating, and maintenance cost of competing approaches so the client can choose on facts.
- Help write SOPs, preventive-maintenance notes, and startup plans. Support pilot work when the application needs it.
- Travel to customer sites in the Kansas City region and, as projects require, elsewhere in the U.S. Travel is less than 10%.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, civil, or environmental engineering, or a closely related field.
- At least three years designing, specifying, building, or commissioning systems. High-purity, membrane, boiler, cooling, or industrial wastewater experience is useful.
- The ability to proactively learn products and technologies by reviewing websites, data sheets, manuals, and 3rd party training.
- Drawings, calculations, and specs that a fabricator and a field technician can use.
- Clear writing and straightforward client communication. You can effectively explain a recommendation.
- Willingness to help solve problems and self-driven to learn the business to be able to do tasks on your own.
How we work

This is not a position where you will be expected to design solutions around specific products or even the products we manufacture. You will be expected to look after the client’s best interests.
