Position Title: Operations Field Technician II

Supervisor: Field Operations Manager

Compensation: Starting hourly range $25-35; commensurate with skills and experience
Hours: Full-time; Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm

Maas Energy Works is the leading developer and operator of on-farm waste-to-energy systems in the United States. The company designs, develops, constructs, and operates biogas-powered renewable energy generation systems on dairy farms. Our projects include anaerobic digesters, biogas-powered electric generation, and renewable compressed natural gas (RNG) upgrading.

Position Description:
The Operations Field Technician II will ensure the RNG facility and all equipment related to biogas handling, upgrading, clean-up, and power generation (combustion engines/generators) are operating properly. The technician is expected to perform routine and preventative maintenance, repair equipment as necessary, and troubleshoot issues as they arise, while coordinating with co-workers and business partners as needed. Equipment to be operated and serviced will most commonly include biogas-powered generator engines (gensets), PLCs, data loggers, biogas blowers, reciprocating and screw compressors, 3-phase motors, and electrical wiring. Applicants should have experience with a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment and enjoy troubleshooting issues within industrial facilities. Excellent communication skills (verbal, phone, email, and text) are needed to work in this team-based, distributed support environment.

Responsibilities:
Perform routine maintenance on biogas combustion engines (gensets) and associated power generation equipment, including regular oil changes, air filter replacements, ignition system checks, engine coolant system maintenance, and servicing of slurry heaters and emissions control systems (SCR).
Troubleshoot and repair issues with genset engines and generator units, diagnosing mechanical or electrical problems. Conduct engine overhauls and major repairs as needed (e.g., replacing or rebuilding components such as cylinder heads, valve trains, pistons, connecting rods, crankshafts, turbochargers) and ensure generator windings and electrical systems are properly maintained. Also assist in troubleshooting other facility equipment (such as PLCs, compressors, and pumps) on-site or via remote support tools as issues arise.

Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans for all critical equipment, especially gensets. Utilize the company’s maintenance tracking software (CMMS) to schedule and document maintenance activities, track performance, and ensure timely execution of preventive maintenance tasks.
Coordinate repair work with team members and external contractors as necessary, and ensure all maintenance checklists and standard operating procedures are followed and completed on schedule.

Oversee on-site operations, ensuring that all equipment and systems (including the biogas digesters, gas upgrading systems, and generator engines) are operating as designed while maximizing facility up-time.
Ability to prioritize tasks.
Maintain spare parts inventory to ensure critical replacement components are readily available.

Communicate via email, text, and phone with team members, clients, and business partners as necessary regarding operational status, maintenance plans, and issues.
Support team members and contribute to a collaborative, team-based work environment, while balancing reactive and preventative maintenance priorities as appropriate.
Maintain a safe working environment and comply with all safety procedures and regulatory requirements, including those related to site operations, digester systems, and RNG equipment.

Qualifications & Skills:Required:
Ability to work in the field unsupervised
General mechanical and electrical experience (2 years preferred)
Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing internal combustion engines or generator sets, including performing routine servicing and major engine overhauls
Analog and Discrete I/O – Calibration and troubleshooting
VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives)
24 VDC – 480 VAC electrical systems
Experience with large horsepower rotating equipment
Ability and desire to learn new equipment, software, and electronic interfaces
Analytical/critical thinker with the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems
Self-starter
Quick learner
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams) & blueprints
Welding and fabrication skills
Knowledge of drive train alignment procedures
Rigging and lifting procedures
Proficient in English; Spanish helpful but not required
Valid U.S. driver’s license
Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather conditions and around livestock/agricultural environments

Preferred:
Familiarity with laboratory procedures & testing
General understanding of dairy farm manure handling practices
Understanding of SCADA systems and PLC logic
HVAC experience
Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or maintenance tracking software
Dairy digester experience

Physical Demands Requirements

Work Environment: This job primarily operates in outdoor conditions that include inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). Noise levels may be loud at times, and the role involves working around moving mechanical or construction equipment.

Physical Demands: Must be able to move objects of at least 50 lbs., and use leg, abdominal, and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires constant movement and use of limbs; it requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
