Project Engineer III - Sustainability Los Angeles Community College District

MAAS Companies
Los Angeles, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 6/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 8/4/2026

The Work

LACCD is delivering a large-scale sustainability capital program across nine campuses through the BuildLACCD bond program. Projects include solar PV and battery storage, central plant decarbonization, building management systems, EV charging infrastructure, LED retrofits, and energy information system platforms.

As Project Engineer III – Sustainability, you're embedded in the PMO managing the construction delivery of these projects. You coordinate design teams, manage contractors, negotiate change orders, conduct field checks, and maintain the documentation required for DSA certification and project closeout.

What You'll Own

  • Field compliance verification on sustainability system installations against plans, specifications, and DSA requirements
  • Change order review, estimation, negotiation, and processing
  • RFI and submittal coordination with architects, engineers, and consultants
  • Contractor and consultant management including invoice review and approval
  • Risk assessment and risk register development with mitigation strategies
  • Construction and design meeting facilitation and distribution of meeting minutes
  • Weekly and monthly status reporting with field documentation
  • Preparation of Proposed Board Actions and Scope of Work documents
  • Project file maintenance in electronic and paper format

What You Bring

  • 7 years of professional construction experience in a project engineering role — specific projects, timelines, and dollar values on your resume
  • Hands-on capital construction delivery experience on sustainability systems — not operations, not maintenance. You've managed at least two or three of the following through construction and commissioning: solar PV and BESS, central plant decarbonization, building management systems, EV charging infrastructure, LED lighting retrofits, energy information system platforms. You've been on site during commissioning, not just design reviews.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, electrical single-line drawings, and shop drawings across sustainability system types
  • Change order negotiation experience on complex electrical and mechanical scopes
  • Strong written and verbal communication — field reports, meeting minutes, board actions, and RFI responses
  • BS/BA in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or related field (additional experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis)

Preferred

  • DSA experience on California public education projects
  • Experience with utility interconnection coordination for solar and storage projects
  • Full project lifecycle experience including master planning, design, and closeout
  • PE, CCM, LEED AP, CEM, or similar credentials

Why MAAS

MAAS has spent nearly 40 years earning the trust of 50 educational institutions across California, managing over $10B in projects. That track record means the work here is stable, funded, and consequential — you're not chasing the next contract.

As a MAAS employee, you're also an owner. The company is 100% employee-owned through an ESOP — a retirement benefit provided at no cost to you, on top of your salary. MAAS is a profitable, well-run organization and our share price has more than doubled since the plan's inception, with continued growth year over year. Your ownership stake builds the longer you stay, and ESOP participants nationally tend to accumulate 2.5x more in retirement savings than employees at non-ESOP companies.

In an industry not known for prioritizing culture, 96% of MAAS employees say it's a great place to work, and 100% say people genuinely care about each other.
