Auto Body Sander/Masker

Job Overview

An Auto Body Sander/Masker prepares damaged vehicle panels, body parts, and full car bodies for painting. This involves removing imperfections, applying body filler or primers, precision sanding, and taping off areas that should not receive paint.

Key Responsibilities

• Surface Preparation: Clean, wash, grease-treat, and sand metal, fiberglass, or plastic surfaces using hand sanders, block sanders, or dual-action (DA) power sanders.
• Masking & Taping: Carefully apply paper, plastic sheeting, and masking tape to protect windows, trim, wheels, lights, and adjacent unpainted panels from overspray.
• Body Filler & Priming: Apply body fillers and putties to smooth out minor dents or scratches; apply primer/sealer coats to prepped areas.
• Detail Inspection: Inspect prepped surfaces by hand touch and visual check to catch imperfections, runs, scratches, or uneven texture before paint application.
• Buffing & Finishing: Assist with post-paint detail work, such as wet-sanding clearcoats, buffing, and polishing to remove dust or runs.
• Equipment & Shop Maintenance: Maintain sanding tools, clean spray booths, dispose of hazardous materials properly, and adhere to safety/OSHA guidelines (wearing PPE like respirators and safety glasses).

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Experience: 1 years of experience in collision repair, auto body shop prep, or vocational auto refinishing training preferred.
• Technical Knowledge: Understanding grit progressions (e.g., P180 to P800 wet/dry), sanding block techniques, primer mixing, and masking procedures.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, bend, kneel, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. High manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
• Attention to Detail: Excellent eye for visual surface flaws and tactile sensing of surface contours.

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour
