The General Ledger Accounting Supervisor works under the direction of the Accounting Director or Manager with responsibility to perform all general ledger accounting responsibilities and to supervise staff. Ensures the proper training of each General Ledger Accountant and provides guidance and direction for daily and monthly property accounting activities to ensure all deadlines are met.

- Prepares and reviews assigned property financial statements on a monthly basis for a complex portfolio of properties with residential and/or commercial/retail components.
- Manages a team of accounting professionals. Recruits, selects, develops and manages individual and team performance. Provides direction, guidance and coaching to ensure efficiency and effectiveness and associate development.
- Interacts with operations management to provide customer service, support, and troubleshooting of escalated issues.
- Oversees and completes the monthly general accounting function for an assigned portfolio of properties for month-end close. Prepares journal entries to post to the general ledger. Prepares financial statements and other reports for each property and reviews financial statements for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintains and applies knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Policies and Procedures (GAAP) to property accounting activities and ensures compliance.
- Identifies, develops, documents and implements innovative and improved processes to automate and enhance efficiencies of residential and/or commercial/retail accounting activities.
- If assigned to a commercial property portfolio, reviews, interprets and abstracts complex and negotiated lease agreements to general ledger accounting requirements for commercial properties.
- May apply knowledge of the unique complexities of commercial accounts such as straight line rent amortizations, percentage rent calculations, assigning and maintaining of CAM pools as well as common area expense (CAM), tax and insurance reconciliations and cross-charging.
- May assist Commercial Management with accounts receivable, default and late notices, and assignment of late fees.
- Provides continued training to general ledger accountants.
- Travels occasionally (5-10%) for on-site meetings and events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and four years of professional accounting experience required.
- Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
- Supervisory and project management experience preferred.
- Experience with Yardi system preferred.
- For commercial/retail accounting, experience with commercial lease administration, straight line rent amortization, FMV of leases, and CAM reconciliations and cross-charging preferred.
- Knowledge of all core accounting principles and best practices, including GAAP
- For commercial/retail accounting, knowledge of accounting practices specific to commercial operations (straight line rent amortization, percentage rent, CAM pools, CAM reconciliations and cross-charging)
- Knowledge of lease contract terms, conditions and concepts, and abstraction
- Supervisory and leadership skills to assess, coach, develop and manage performance of others
- Process management skills to develop, document, analyze and improve processes and procedures
- Skill and ability to clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing.
- Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and attention to details
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge and skills to organize, prioritize, and meet time-sensitive deadlines
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint)
- Ability to travel overnight
