Lynn is a seaside urban district located on Boston’s north shore.  The city is known for its contemporary public art, historic architecture, downtown cultural district, and public parks and open spaces, which include the oceanfront Lynn Shore Reservation and Lynn Woods Reservation.  Home to an international population, Lynn Public Schools services almost 17,000 students across 18 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 2 comprehensive high schools, 1 vocational school, and 1 alternative junior/senior high school. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary license in the specific subject area(s): School Counselor 5-12
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college.
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college/university in high school guidance.
  • Fluent speaker of Spanish and knowledge of other cultures, preferred 
  • A minimum of five years’ successful teaching experience at the secondary level preferred.
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents and advocate for children in order to effectively problem solve
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and ability to work with all stakeholders
  • Experience in urban district/setting preferred

Job Goal: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible adults.

 

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Admits students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the varied opportunities for learning.
  • Disseminates information regarding educational and career opportunities.
  • Selects, administers, and interprets standardized tests to assist students in making appropriate career choices.
  • Aids students in course and subject selection.
  • Works to resolve students’ educational disabilities.
  • Works toward reducing the number of students who leave school before graduation.
  • Provides student information to college and potential employers according to provisions of the State’s and School Committee’s policy on student records.
  • Evaluates departmental personnel in accordance with School Committee policy.
  • Assists in developing mentoring programs and arranging home class tutoring.
  • Informs students and faculty of relative school and community activities.
  • Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students.
  • Helps students explore career interests and choices.
  • Participates in career day and college fair projects.
  • Works with students on an individual basis to resolve personal problems which impact their educational progress.
  • Schedules meetings with parents, as needed, to discuss students’ educational progress and adjustment.
  • Remains up-to-date on changing job-entry skill requirements and changing technologies in business and industry.
  • Maintains a file of catalogs, school profiles, and scholarship aid information related to schools, colleges, and institutions offering post-secondary education.
  • Works with Department Heads to assign students to appropriate classes.
  • Maintains (updates) students’ folders on a regular basis.
  • Performs any other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal within the job description.
  • Is available for appointments after the close of the school day

 

 

REPORTS TO:          Principal

EVALUATION:         Performance will be evaluated by the Principal.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

DAYS:                     190 Days; additional days as determined by the Principal inaccordance with the Lynn School                                                   Administrators’ Association

 

SALARY:                  $96,271-  Per Lynn School Administrators’ Association contract

                                Effective July 1, 2024- $99,640

 An offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment physical, including a drug test, National fingerprint-based Criminal Background Check (NCBC) and Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI).  All MUST be completed PRIOR to the start of employment.
