GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Early LIFE Food Handler/Teacher’s Aide manages the food program provided to students of the preschool. This staff member receives food deliveries and distributes snacks and meals to individual classrooms at breakfast, lunch and snack times. The Food Handler/Teacher’s Aide also assumes Teacher’s Aide responsibilities for a portion of the day by assisting with supervising and teaching students and otherwise ensuring the students’ safety and well-being.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure that appropriate meals and snacks are provided to students as scheduled.

Comply with all health and sanitary regulations and guidelines governing food preparation, storage and cooking.

Ensure that meals and snacks are attractive and palatable and meet temperature requirements.

Minimize leftovers to reduce food waste.

Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen.

Take and record the daily meal count.

Ensure that first aid equipment is present and visible in food service areas.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher in supervising, instructing and supporting students.

Assist with collecting and correcting children’s work.

Assist with progress reports and contacting parents.

Assist with incident reporting.

Ensure that students are always accompanied by an adult and are directly supervised as they move about the Center.

Ensure that the classroom is clean and orderly at the end of the day.

Represent Lutheran Social Service of New York’s mission, values, ethics, and uphold agency Code of Conduct at all times.

Assist in other duties as assigned by the Center Director.

Qualifications:EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED
Certificate in Food Protection
Training in food preparation and nutrition
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in food service and teaching/child care
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to follow all Federal and New York State food service, cooking, storage and sanitation guidelines
Demonstrated ability to obtain and store for review necessary food menus, production records, recipes, and nutritional data analysis from contract food service provider
Demonstrated ability to obtain daily student participation count according to the criteria outlined by the CACFP Program
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with the Center Director and LSSNY’s Nutritional Coordinator
Demonstrated ability to reduce food waste
Demonstrated ability to provide parent training activities supporting our food program
Demonstrated ability to assist in supervising and instructing children
Interest in professional development
