Temporary Summer Position (6–8 Weeks), June-July 2026
Position Purpose
The Temporary Substitute Diesel Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work involving the maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of school buses, activity buses, and other division vehicles/equipment. This temporary summer position supports the Transportation Department during periods of staffing shortages, increased summer maintenance needs, or special projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on school buses and division vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, brakes, suspension systems, steering components, electrical systems, and related mechanical equipment.
- Conduct routine oil changes, fluid checks, tire repairs/replacements, and filter changes.
- Assist with state inspections and ensure vehicles meet safety standards.
- Maintain accurate service and repair records.
- Operate tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and shop equipment safely and appropriately.
- Respond to mechanical issues in a timely manner to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, regulations, and division policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or designee.
Qualifications
- Experience in diesel mechanics, automotive repair, or related field preferred.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, bus maintenance procedures, and vehicle safety standards preferred.
- Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues.
- Ability to safely use mechanic tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in varying temperatures for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate shop equipment and vehicles.
Terms of Employment
- Temporary summer position lasting approximately 6–8 weeks.
- Hourly rate determined by the school division.
- No benefits associated with this temporary position unless otherwise required by law.
- Work schedule to be determined by the Transportation Department.
