Job Title: Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction
FLSA: Exempt
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Education; Virginia Endorsement in Administration and Supervision; History of successful administration in elementary school.
Reports to: Superintendent
Terms of Employment: 12-month contract position
Essential Functions
- Supervises the division-wide elementary instructional program.
- Coordinates curriculum and assessment development, implementation, and revision.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional methods and recommends revisions as needed.
- Provides regular, school-based instructional supervision to ensure the alignment of the written and taught curriculum.
- Provides guidance in the selection of textbooks and instructional materials for the program.
- Recommends expansion or elimination of courses and programs, as necessary.
- Coordinates division-wide elementary activities.
- Assists in revising/updating school division policies and regulations related to elementary schools.
- Provides information as requested for state reporting.
- Ensures elementary schools are supported in efforts to address continuous improvement at higher levels of achievement.
- Monitors class size ratios for the K-3 class size initiative.
- Participates in instructional audits and academic reviews.
- Oversees the Pre-K program, including the VPI Grant, Link B5, collaborating with Head Start, and the Center for Early Success
- Works collaboratively with other central office personnel and instructional specialists to prepare and supervise the program’s budgets.
- Supervises the ordering, inventory, and distribution of materials and equipment for the elementary instructional program.
- Assists teachers in the improvement of instructional delivery and performance.
- Serves as the elementary content specialist, resource, and advisor to teachers, principals, and central office personnel.
- Coordinates meetings with other content specialists, teachers, administrators, and other central office personnel to disseminate information regarding current developments and teaching practices in the field.
- Works collaboratively with central office personnel to develop and conduct division-wide staff development for instructional staff.
- Oversees the development and implementation of professional development for all elementary instructional personnel.
- Represents the school division in educational projects and initiatives at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
- Serves as the central office contact and liaison with parents and the community regarding the division’s elementary instructional program.
- Oversees the Division VTSS grant and VTSS meetings.
- Performs related work as required.
- Leads school-level Reading Specialists in the implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act and oversees the Division Literacy Plan.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of school administration; policies and regulations governing the school division for local, state, and federal entities, school division objectives, procedures, and organization; school personnel and administrative practices, procedures, and methods; principles and methods for training design; teaching and instruction for individuals and groups; the measurement of training effects; and effective leadership practices. Must have knowledge of the Science of Reading and Instructional design. Must have the ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, administrators, teachers, staff and associates.
Education and Experience
Required: Master’s Degree, Post-graduate Professional License required with endorsements in Administration and Supervision, Pre-K-12. Must have extensive administrative and educational experience.
