Duties & Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develops and implements a comprehensive recruitment strategy focused on identifying and recruiting student-athletes, with priority given to recruiting students from New Mexico and surrounding regional communities in accordance with NJCAA regulations.
- Builds relationships with high school coaches, summer programs, community organizations, and families to enhance recruitment pipelines and increase enrollment opportunities for Luna Community College.
- Develops and implements goals, objectives, training strategies, and competitive plans that support student-athlete success both on and off the field.
- Creates a positive, student-centered team culture that promotes accountability, leadership, academic achievement, personal growth, and athletic development.
- Organizes, prepares, and conducts individual and team practices, training sessions, and competitions to support player development and team success.
- Develops student-athletes through mentorship, skill development, academic support, and preparation for transfer opportunities at four-year institutions.
- Promotes academic success, retention, persistence, and degree completion among student-athletes through active monitoring, mentoring, and collaboration with faculty and student support services.
- Utilizes creative and innovative approaches to student-athlete engagement, recruitment, program promotion, and team development, including effective use of technology, social media, and community outreach.
- Represents the baseball program and Luna Community College positively to students, parents, alumni, community members, media, governmental agencies, and the public.
- Contributes to the growth and visibility of the baseball program through community engagement, camps, clinics, fundraising support, and public relations activities.
- Ensures that the baseball program complies with NJCAA, conference, and institutional rules, regulations, and policies.
- Oversees baseball program budgets, procurement processes, supplies, and equipment in accordance with College policies and procedures.
- Coordinates and collaborates with the Head Softball Coach and other departments regarding facilities usage, scheduling, events, and program operations.
- Coordinates team travel, transportation, lodging, meals, and related operational logistics.
- Supervises Assistant Baseball Coach(es) and other assigned personnel.
- Maintains baseball facilities and supports field upkeep and operational readiness.
- Manages daily administrative and operational functions of the baseball program and provides documentation and reports to College administration as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of community college athletic program development and student-athlete success initiatives.
- Knowledge of NJCAA rules, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of modern recruitment strategies and retention practices for student-athletes.
- Ability to foster a positive, student-centered team culture.
- Ability to engage, mentor, and support diverse student populations.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to utilize technology and social media platforms for recruitment, communication, and program promotion.
- Knowledge of budgeting, procurement, and financial management practices.
- Knowledge of strength, conditioning, nutrition, and player development principles.
- Skills in field and facility maintenance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration, and community partners.
- Position requires a flexible work schedule that includes evenings, weekends, holidays, overnight travel, and extended hours in support of practices, competitions, recruitment activities, student-athlete engagement, and community outreach.
- Physical activities including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions are required.
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying environmental conditions.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology, Sports Management, Education, or a related field is required. Master’s Degree preferred.
- At least three years of coaching and student-athlete development experience at the high school, collegiate, or community college level is required.
- Experience in recruitment, player development, and program building is preferred.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within nine (9) months of employment is required.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are preferred and must be obtained within six (6) months of employment if not currently held.
- Ability to complete and maintain required institutional, NJCAA, conference, and student-athlete welfare training and professional development modules.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, coaching education, and modern student-athlete engagement practices.
