Logistics Information
General Info: Each semester we run a debate team that meets once a week at Beaver Country Day School in Newton. The Lumos Debate Team meets once a week for 2-hour classes and has an online debate tournament on the 5th and 10th Saturday of the semester.
Fall Semester Dates: Wednesdays 5-7pm October 4 - December 16.
Prior Experience: Previous debate experience is needed if you are teaching in our Debate Team.
Commitment: You will meet with students once a week for 2 hours classes. Debate Clubs will meet on the 5th and 10th Saturday of the semester for an online tournament. Instructors can teach multiple classes per week to increase their hours.
Time: Exact times/dates will vary depending on which day you are assigned/apply for.
Pay: $20 - $25/hour depending on age and experience (please note-the hourly is an estimation - we pay a monthly salary) Please view the Lumos Debate Team in-person semester pay bracket here: https://tinyurl.com/paybracket
Work Outside of Class: There is extra preparation work at home including planning schedules and preparing for activities. For new instructors, this role could average ~1 hour of outside-of-class preparation work each week, and an additional ~10 hours for the writing of the two individual parent emails. For experienced instructors, this time is much lower, but it is still non-trivial.

Lumos Instructing Details
Job Summary
In this job, you’ll be running a club for 8 students over Zoom with a co-instructor. Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning out your schedule for your students before each class
- Teaching short lessons with slides that have been prepared for you.
- Running the activities in class every day.
- Organizing and running one-on-one coaching sessions (15 minutes each) with students to help them review concepts and improve their speeches.
- Making friends with each and every student and connecting with them.
- Individualizing teaching and activities to every student’s needs.
- Writing weekly blog posts for parents, and sending them in after class.
- Giving a mid-month progress update over the phone.
- Writing lengthy progress updates for parents through email every 5 weeks.
Job Requirements
- You do need to have strong wifi and a computer or laptop that allows you to run classes for 2 hours a day over the internet. The camera and audio must work well for video-chat on your computer or laptop.
- You do need prior debate experience if you are teaching at our Debate Team.

Lumos runs summer programs for middle school and high school students. We teach students the basics of speech and debate, and help the students research and prepare cases.
