What are the responsibilities and job description for the Software Engineer position at Lumion?
Software Engineer at Lumion
Location: In-office, South Jordan, Utah
Comp: Salary meaningful equity bonuses tied to company revenue
What Lumion does
Lumion is the all-in-one operating system for trade and technical schools. We power the entire institution: AI-driven lead generation and conversion, enrollment, financial aid, student lifecycle management, and tuition payments. Most schools are still stitching together five or six disconnected tools to do what our platform handles.
America has a massive skilled trades shortage and the schools that train electricians, welders, and nurses are the bottleneck. We're backed by TTV Capital and Tusk Venture Partners.
The role
There are 11 engineers here building a platform that schools depend on to run. Product gives you strong PRDs and prototypes. The technical decisions are yours.
On one side, you're building AI systems that qualify and convert prospective students at scale. On the other, you're deep in financial aid workflows that touch Title IV compliance and disbursement timing, admissions funnels across a dozen integrations, and infrastructure that can't go down because when it does, enrollment stops.
How we work
You need to be fluent with agentic coding tools. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, whatever you use. We care about the workflow, not the product names. If your AI experience is limited to ChatGPT, this isn't the right fit. But the tools don't replace judgment. You still need to know when the output is wrong and when the fast solution is the expensive one.
The core platform today is PHP and Laravel. That's not sacred. We're open to introducing other languages and frameworks where it makes sense. If you don't know Laravel, you'll pick it up. We care more about how you think than what you've worked in before.
Infra: MySQL, Redis, vector databases (pgvector/Pinecone) for RAG, queue-driven architectures.
What we're looking for
Strong fundamentals. Data modeling, API design, system architecture. You can debug a production issue under pressure.
Real AI fluency. You've used agentic tools to generate, refactor, and debug production code, not side projects. You know when the output is wrong and you can fix it.
Product instinct. This platform handles student records, money, and regulatory compliance. You need to understand why the requirements exist, not just implement them.
Sharp, not credentialed. We don't filter on degree or years of experience.
Why Lumion
Equity. Our revenue is growing and your stock options are tied to that. The things you build here have a direct line to what your equity ends up being worth.
Ownership. You will own more production surface area in two years here than most engineers touch in five somewhere else.
Good tools. MacBook Pro, whatever AI tooling helps you ship.
The work. Trade schools are how people become electricians, nurses, welders. We're building the software that makes those schools actually run.
