Summary:
Join Lumen as a Research Associate on our Protein Sciences team. In this role, you’ll support scientists across multiple projects to advance protein therapeutics for expression in Lumen’s spirulina-based platform. You’ll contribute to protein expression across a range of systems, purification, and characterization workflows that enable Lumen’s goals.
You’ll conduct molecular biology and protein biochemistry activities such as protein expression, SDS-PAGE analysis, affinity chromatography, and size-exclusion chromatography. You’ll independently learn and apply new laboratory techniques, operate specialized instruments, perform delicate manual procedures, follow standard protocols, and record reliable data in Lumen’s electronic lab notebooks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare working and stock reagents for protein expression, purification, and analysis
- Conduct molecular biology and protein biochemistry experiments, including:
- Protein expression in diverse expression systems
- SDS-PAGE analysis
- Affinity chromatography
- Size exclusion chromatography
- Learn and apply new laboratory techniques while maintaining high technical accuracy
- Operate specialized laboratory instruments and perform precise manual procedures
- Follow established laboratory protocols to ensure consistency and reliability
- Record, analyze, and report experimental data in Lumen’s electronic Lab Notebook system
- Collaborate with team members to support therapeutic program milestones
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related field
- 0–2 years of relevant laboratory experience (academic or industry)
- Skills and Attributes
- Molecular biology laboratory experience
- Experience in protein expression using various expression platforms including bacterial systems preferred
- Experience with chromatography using AKTA and Unicorn preferred
- Well-organized and detail-oriented with strong technical skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proven ability to multitask
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate across multiple teams
- High integrity and ethics
- Commitment to quality and timely delivery of results
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Physical Requirements
- Sit for extended periods of time (2 or more hours)
- The position also requires standing on your feet for extended periods of time
- Occasionally lift or carry up to 23 kg with assistance
- Perform delicate manual procedures in the laboratory
