Primary purpose

Provide evidenced based dyslexia instruction services to assess students, provide intervention, monitor student progress with appropriate intervention instruction, learning activities, and experiences in the areas of dyslexia and reading to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Participate and provide documentation for Special Education meetings and 504 meetings as well as input student data. Work with general education and special education teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations for students.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned

Special knowledge/skills

Knowledge of Dyslexia

Knowledge of reading instructional strategies

Knowledge of intervention instructional strategies and best practices

Knowledge of the science of reading

Ability to analyze data and provide targeted intervention support to at-risk students

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Reading by Design certification

Evaluation experience

Strong organizational, communication, technical and interpersonal skills

Major responsibilities and duties

Instructional Strategies

  • Collaborate with students, parents and other members of staff to develop through the 504 or ARD for each student assigned.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Follow all expectations as defined by the Texas Dyslexia Handbook
  • Provide instruction ensuring fidelity of the program
  • Conduct formal evaluations to assist in determining absence or presence of dyslexia as defined in the Texas Dyslexia Handbook
  • Maintain student data for IEP progress reporting
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
  • Use technology in teaching/learning process.

School Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities and duties as assigned by the campus principal.
  • Be a positive role model for students and staff members; support mission of school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Present campus dyslexia training and staff development as requested.

  • Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s) if applicable.
