What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paint Sales Specialist position at Lumber Barn?
Company Overview
Lumber Barn is a locally trusted independent hardware and lumber store known for friendly service, practical advice, and a team that genuinely likes helping people get projects done. We work with homeowners, contractors, and property managers every day, and we take pride in being the kind of place customers want to come back to.
Overview
We’re looking for a friendly, hands-on Paint Sales Specialist who enjoys helping people, solving project questions, and keeping things running smoothly in a busy retail setting. In this role, you’ll help DIY customers, contractors, and property managers choose the right paints, stains, primers, tools, and supplies, while also mixing paint, matching colors, building estimates, and keeping the department sharp, organized, and ready for business.
Duties
- Welcome customers and help them choose the right interior/exterior paints, primers, stains, sealers, and supplies for the look and finish they want.
- Tint and mix paint accurately, match colors from chips, samples, or customer-provided items, and label formulas according to store procedures.
- Put together estimates and explain product recommendations, including coverage, quantities, sheen, prep, and dry/cure times, so customers can take on their projects with confidence.
- Build strong relationships with local contractors and account customers, assist with quotes and special orders, and ensure pickups and deliveries stay on track.
- Keep the department looking great by stocking shelves, facing products, updating signage, maintaining the color wall, and keeping work areas clean and ready for customers.
- Keep an eye on inventory and help with receiving, pricing, rotating stock, and organizing back stock so core items stay available.
- Follow safety and environmental procedures for chemical handling, spill response, and disposal. Help keep equipment like shakers and tint machines in good working order and report issues quickly.
- Pitch in across the store when needed, whether that means helping customers find products or supporting checkout and phones during busy times.
Skills
- Working knowledge of interior and exterior paints, primers, stains, sealers, caulks, adhesives, abrasives, and applicators.
- Experience mixing paint, doing color matches, and keeping formulas and labels accurate.
- Ability to build trust with DIY customers, contractors, and account customers by giving solid recommendations and following through.
- Experience using POS systems for special orders, inventory lookups, and account support in a retail setting.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- This is a full-time retail schedule with weekday shifts and rotating Saturdays, plus a weekday off when scheduled. Some flexibility may be needed during busy paint and seasonal periods. No Sundays.
- The work is on the retail sales floor and in the paint department, so it involves frequent standing and walking and the ability to lift and move paint and related products, often up to 40 lbs.
- You’ll be working around paint, related chemicals, and equipment like the tint machine and shaker, so following safety procedures is important. You may also help customers in other parts of the store as needed.
