Summary
The Middle Officer’s primary purpose is to support trading and ETRM communication, monitor daily trading activity for the trading desk, produce analysis, and work with other Middle Officers to produce daily reports and alerts to decision-makers, i.e. Traders and Management.
Roles and Responsibilities
In accordance with risk management knowledge and increasing competencies (leading to increase of complexity of issues to be solved) the Middle Officer, under supervision of a Manager when necessary, is responsible to:
- Ensure trading activity complies with internal and external policies and limits
- Update and enrich Energy Trade and Risk Management (ETRM) system deals and data to reflect current trading strategies and operations
- Analyze daily Profit & Loss (P&L) and Exposure for designated Line of Business
- Communicate regularly with Trading to ensure proper booking and system allocations
- Coordinate with various functional groups to highlight inconsistent data in ETRM
- Perform ad hoc market or quantitative analysis
- Ensure market valuation of positions held are as accurate as possible
- Work closely with other Middle Officers to analyze specific trading transactions and activity
- Participate in reconciling the daily P&L
- Share knowledge and expertise with other Risk Management team members
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Good knowledge of the physical oil markets (terminologies, contracts, data, fundamentals)
- Understanding of physical commodities trading and global markets
- Understanding of requirements of Risk Management control
- Understanding of the concept of hedging and derivative contracts
- Knowledge of an ETRM system
- Excellent knowledge of MS Excel, preferably with VBA and SQL programming
- Rigor, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, to interact efficiently with colleagues and other departments, i.e. Trading
- Ability to remain independent and objective with respect to trader expectations
- Conceptual thinking: understanding key issues and implementation of coherent, practical solutions
- Interest in energy commodity trading
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Normal days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Economics / Business / Finance
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a commodities middle office or risk management department calculating and analyzing daily P&L and Exposure
