Schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays. The facility operates 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.

Position Overview

The General Anesthesiologist provides comprehensive anesthesia services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), the Nation's largest joint military medical center. The provider delivers pre-, intra-, and post-operative anesthesia care for a broad range of surgical subspecialties and patient populations (neonatal through geriatric), functioning within a high-acuity, academic, and mission-essential environment.

Position Qualification/Requirements

Education: Successfully completed an Undergraduate Program, Medical School (M.D. or D.O.), Internship, and Residency Program in Anesthesiology.

Licensure: Valid unrestricted medical license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.

Board Certification: Board certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Must be a Diplomat of the ABA and an active participant in the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) program.

Certifications: Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification by the American Heart Association.

Additional Certification/License

  • Maintain documentation of current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number.
  • Must obtain/maintain a 10-digit National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Experience: Minimum 5 years of active practice in anesthesiology.

Duties

  • Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews of patients.
  • Provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through geriatric patients (ASA classifications I-VI).
  • Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
  • Provide resuscitative care during a cardiopulmonary arrest, and sedation or general anesthetic care at remote locations.
  • Assist in the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy.
  • Implement the proper use of mechanical ventilators in the recovery room and intensive care units.
  • Interpret test results and evaluate findings.
  • Work under the general professional direction of the Chief of Anesthesiology Services.
  • Provide consultation and teaching services to staff members and ambulatory clinics.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, receiving consultations and laboratory work for specific patients.
  • Perform Personal and Medical Direction duties: preanesthetic evaluation, anesthesia plan development and implementation, induction, post-anesthesia care, and remaining physically available for the immediate diagnosis and treatment of emergencies.
  • Prepare patients and, if necessary, equipment for procedures; perform invasive procedures.
  • Maintain professional competency through participation in professional organizations, self-directed journal readings, and attendance at in-service and continuing education programs.
  • Complete all forms and reports accurately and promptly.
  • Provide patient education on therapy, medications, and procedures.
  • Participate in clinic quality assurance, utilization review, risk management, and peer review activities.
  • Attend medical staff meetings as required.
  • Give two grand-round lectures via PowerPoint annually; participate in chapter reviews and case conferences.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Provide regional and/or general anesthesia care for: general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiothoracic, vascular, dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, and dermatology.
  • Collaborate with or direct up to four CRNAs simultaneously; administer anesthesia in lieu of CRNA to patients with particular anesthetic difficulty.
  • Cover Personal and Medical Direction duties including preanesthetic evaluation, prescription of anesthesia plan, induction and emergence participation, and post-anesthesia care.
  • Instruct and teach Army members; share responsibility for preparing residents for their boards.

Special Requirements/Skills

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
