Responsibilities

  • Accurately document all repairs, labor hours, and parts used on work orders.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and shop safety standards.
  • Operate shop equipment safely, including hoists, presses, torches, welders, and diagnostic tools.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul heavy-duty diesel engines and sub-assemblies.
  • Repair and replace transmissions, clutches, driveshafts, differentials, and axle assemblies.
  • Inspect, rebuild, and service hydraulic systems (pumps, hoses, valves, and cylinders) on equipment and trailers.
  • Use diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit DDDL, CAT ET) to troubleshoot fault codes and mechanical failure.
  • Trace and repair complex electrical issues, starting/charging systems, multiplex wiring, and lighting.
  • Diagnose and service modern diesel exhaust/emissions systems (DPF, SCR, DEF, and EGR components).
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance (PMs), including fluid/filter changes, grease jobs, and safety checks.
  • Conduct thorough Certified DOT inspections and complete required compliance documentation.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, suspensions, wheel ends, and tire conditions.

Skills

  • Engine Rebuilding & Overhauls: Skilled in performing in-frame and out-of-frame overhauls (piston/liner replacement, cylinder head work, setting valve lash, timing gear alignment).
  • Heavy Drivetrains: Expertise in inspecting, servicing, and replacing heavy-duty manual/automated transmissions (Eaton, Allison, Detroit DT12), clutches, torque converters, drivelines, and differential assemblies.
  • Brakes & Suspensions: Complete understanding of heavy-duty air brake systems (S-cam, air disc, ABS modules), steering linkages, kingpins, and heavy-duty leaf/air-ride suspensions.
  • Hydraulic Diagnostics: Ability to read hydraulic schematics, test system pressures (PSI/flow), and rebuild/replace high-pressure pumps, valve banks, hoses, and cylinders.
  • Air Systems: Servicing air compressors, governor valves, air dryers, and brake valves to ensure air-system integrity.
  • Software Diagnostics: Hands-on experience with OEM software (Cummins Insite, Detroit DDDL, CAT ET, Volvo PTT, Wabco) to pull fault codes, run forced DPF regenerations, and monitor live parameters.
  • Electrical System Tracing: Ability to read schematics and use a Digital Multimeter (DMM) to diagnose voltage drops, short circuits, sensor failures, and CAN-bus communication faults.
  • Aftertreatment & Emissions: Deep technical knowledge of Tier 4 and modern road emissions systems, including EGR valves, DPF cleaning/rebuilding, SCR catalysts, and DEF dosing units.
  • Welding & Torch Work: Proficiency in MIG (GMAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding for frame repairs, cross-member replacements, trailer floor grid repairs, and custom bracket fabrication.
  • Precision Machining & Fitting: Operating manual lathes/mills, using precision tools (micrometers, dial indicators) to measure clearances, and executing thread repairs or bolt extractions.
  • Surface Prep & Refinishing: Setting up abrasive sandblasting equipment and applying heavy-duty industrial coatings/primers using HVLP spray equipment.
  • DOT Compliance & Safety: Thorough knowledge of Federal DOT/CVSA inspection criteria to ensure vehicles are safe and compliant before leaving the shop.
  • Problem-Solving & Efficiency: Ability to systematically isolate mechanical failures quickly to minimize customer downtime.
  • Work Order Documentation: Accurately logging diagnostic findings, parts used, labor hours, and specific repair procedures into shop management systems.

Don't meet every single requirement? Apply anyway! We value strong hands-on problem-solving skills and a solid work ethic. A Mechanic Certification or CDL is preferred, but not mandatory.
