Job Summary:

As a Closing Uppers associate, the employee is responsible for joining the front and back quarters of the boot upper with precision and consistency to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic excellence. This role directly impacts the quality, durability, and appearance of each pair of boots and requires technical sewing proficiency, manual dexterity, and a strong understanding of leather construction.
The Closing Uppers associate operates in alignment with Lucchese values, adheres to company policies and safety standards, and contributes to maintaining production flow within the manufacturing process.
Scope of job:
The Closing Uppers position is responsible for assembling leather upper components through skilled sewing operations. This process includes aligning, stitching, and inspecting leather pieces to ensure proper construction before the boots advance to the next stage of production.
Work involves:
- Handling premium leather materials
- Operating industrial sewing machinery
- Reading and interpreting production tickets
- Performing quality inspections throughout the closing process
The role requires precision, hand-eye coordination, consistency in stitch quality, and the ability to meet production standards without compromising craftsmanship.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Closing Uppers associates may perform the following operations on an as-needed basis:
- Retrieve production boxes from rail system.
- Review and interpret production tickets for style, size, and specifications.
- Align front and back quarters evenly from top to bottom to ensure symmetry.
- Position leather components properly into industrial sewing machine.
- Sew front and back pieces from top to bottom, ensuring secure and accurate closure.
- Maintain consistent stitch tension and seam alignment.
- Inspect seams to confirm threads are properly secured and no defects are present.
- Verify the upper is even and balanced from top to bottom.
- Return completed pairs to the production box and place onto rails for next operation.
- Maintain workstation cleanliness and organization.
- Follow all safety guidelines
Quality & Production Expectations:
- Meet established daily production goals.
- Maintain stitch accuracy and structural integrity standards.
- Minimize rework through proactive quality checks.
- Handle materials carefully to prevent leather damage.
- Escalate quality or material concerns to Supervisor promptly.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong visual acuity to inspect stitching accuracy, seam alignment, and overall construction quality.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow production tickets and work orders accurately.
- Working knowledge of upper construction techniques and industrial sewing processes.
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship standards.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate within a team-based production environment.
- Good organizational skills to maintain workflow efficiency and workstation order.
- Ability to meet daily production quotas while maintaining quality standards.
- Ability to work overtime as required to support production demands.
Education, Experience, and/or Certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of related experience in boot manufacturing, leather goods production, or industrial sewing environment required.
- Experience working with leather materials preferred.
- Prior experience operating industrial sewing machines strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-driven manufacturing environment.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, and fingers for repetitive sewing motions.
- Must be able to work with adhesives and leather treatment materials in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Ability to maintain focus and precision throughout repetitive tasks.
