Unit Summary
Burk 1 is a specialized 17-bed Pulmonary Care long-term care unit where residents make their home and receive comprehensive nursing care. Many residents are alert and oriented but require assistance managing chronic and acute medical conditions. The unit also cares for residents with chronic tracheostomies, providing nurses with valuable experience in complex pulmonary and long-term care nursing.

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Director of Nursing, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) utilizes nursing knowledge and assessment skills to develop and implement individualized care plans that meet the needs of residents. The LPN provides direct patient care, administers medications and treatments, monitors resident conditions, and supports daily unit operations. The LPN may also assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level as needed.
Essential Responsibilities
- Deliver safe, compassionate, and resident-centered nursing care.
- Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with physician orders and established policies.
- Monitor, assess, and document resident conditions and report changes appropriately.
- Assist in developing and implementing individualized care plans.
- Provide care for residents with chronic pulmonary conditions and tracheostomies.
- Collaborate with physicians, registered nurses, therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Educate residents and families regarding care plans and treatment goals.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record.
- Support daily unit operations and assume shift leadership responsibilities as assigned.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (Diploma or Practical Nursing Program).
Licensure & Certifications
- Current Maryland Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification.
Experience
- Less than one year of nursing experience required.
- Long-term care, pulmonary, rehabilitation, or tracheostomy care experience preferred.
Skills & Knowledge
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Experience with electronic health records (Synquest preferred).
- Familiarity with:
- IV Pumps
- Phillips Monitoring System
- Accu-Chek devices
- EKG Machines
- Specialty Bed Operation
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
